Police said the car, a twoâ€"door, white 1989 Pontiac Grand Am had been stolen from the Clarkson GO station earlier in the day. The man and his friends chased after the car on foot. They scurried through the downtown corridor and caught up with the Pontiac while it was parked just west of Trafalgar Road. Police said the man then grabbed the male driver and hauled him out of the car. His two friends collared a male passenger from the car. It was then however that the events took a surprising turn. Another man appeared on the sceneâ€"and pulled a black handgun on the three friends. He ordered them to let go of the driver and passenger. The passenger managed to wrigâ€" gle free and fled on foot. One of the two friends chased after him. Police said the man with the gun then turned on the man who was trying to retrieve his mother‘s car and ordered him to let go of the driver. He did so and the driver and man with the gun got in the car and sped off. As the car was heading east on Trafalgar Road, the friend who‘d chased the fleeing passenger unsucâ€" cessfully, returned to Lakeshore Road just in time to see the car going by with the two men inside. Groups warned funding drying up Recipients of municipal grants this year are being warned ahead of time to think about alternate funding next year. In a recent letter mailed to all beneficiaries of 1993 Town Grants, director of Finance and Treasurer Michelle Seguin alluded to the Town‘s "new and unexpected financial challenges" and to reductions in provincial funding which will continue next year. Combined with the current economic climate, she said the Town‘s available resources for 1994 will be limited. "This may affect the amount of your 1994 funding," explained Seguin‘s letter. "Although, we are not far enough along in the 1994 Budget process to determine the actual impact on the individual grants, we felt it necessary to inform you of the expected constraints. We encourage you to take actions to minimize your reliance on Town funding as your 1994 grant may be affected." Town grants â€" which are awarded to a variety of cultural, sport and other local organizations â€" totalled just over $500,000 for 1993. (Minor sports accounted for $310,000, cultural activities $78,000.) t Seguin explained that advance warning will be particularly helpful to minor hockey, for example, since fees for the 1993â€"94 season will be in place this fall. While every Town department has been forced to reduce their budget each year, grants have been on a steady climb. Next year, says Seguin, will likely be different. : We all have to feel the pinch," she said. Seguin plans to report to Council in August on the current state of the Town‘s financial situation. The 1994 Budget Committee begins meeting in January and will report back to Council in February. He ducked behind another car and the car sped away. Halton police were called and about 20 minutes later found the stolen car abandoned in the area of Navy Street and King Street. The police launched a manhunt in the area complete with police tracking dog but Wilkinson said the dog lost the suspects‘ track in the vicinity of the harbor.
