In a frank discussion on violence, Paul Bennett, executiveâ€"director of the Halton Sexual Abuse Program, pointed out one aspect of violence that may often be overlooked when he pinpointâ€" ed the enormous monetary cost to sociâ€" ety of treating the "walking wounded," By BARB JOY Oakville Beaver Staff Everyone knows violence cause physical and psychological damage But it also creates a big fat bill for tax payers. Violence costs society ‘many billions of dollars each year,‘ conference told As in the past two years, Take Back the Night will begin with a gathâ€" jering at 6:30 p.m., featuring speakers and musicians, followed by the walk beginning at dusk. Candles, buttons and Tâ€"shirts will be sold to defray costs. Participants are again being asked to wear purple and white, "the colors of power and hope," says Sclisizzi. Take Back the Night is being supported by the Halton Rape Crisis Centre, the Women‘s Information and Support Centre, WHAM â€" Women of Halton Action Movement, and AWARE â€" A Walk About Rights Everywhere. "This walk hopes to bring a community, still angered at the deaths of Leslie Mahaffy, Nina De Villiers and Kristen French, together to voice rage at the realities of violence and explore ways of putting an end to this violence." "Like similar walks being organized across the country," says comâ€" mittee chair Lauren Sclisizzi, "the Halton walk will provide an opportuâ€" nity for Halton citizens to publicly voice their outrage at the realities of violence that prevents women from walking the streets without fear. Halton‘s third annual Take Back the Night Walk will be held tomorâ€" row night, Sept. 23rd, at Coronation Park. Last year‘s event drew about 1,500 participants, and the first year saw a record of some 4,000 women carrying banners, marching along Lakeshore Road from Coronation Park to East Street in Bronte and back. & But, unlike the last two years, men are welcome to join tomorrow‘s walk. t Special Savings Available Including 280 North Service Road West Oakville, Ontario Conveniently located at the northâ€"west corner of Dorval Drive & QEW (in Oakville Town Centre 1 Men may join walk 199 THE DOCTOR‘S OFFICE 338â€"3730 FAMILY PRACTICE BY APPOINTMENT Indian languages spoken by Doctor DR. "Starting with TV, I consider the impact of cartoon violence on young children is as great as if these children were directly violated by someone in the family. Yet we still tolerate it," At the same time, profitâ€"motivated forces are at work in the community to ensure the maintainance of violence â€" forces such as the armament industry, movie and video manufacturers, he said. Noting that he found it "terribly sad" that careers are built out of people damaged by sexual abuse, he also thought society is "penny wise and pound foolish" in treating only sympâ€" toms of violence and not the root probâ€" ‘"We‘ve got to reach the men doing these things, the men who are using violence to get their own needs met," he stressed. A pilot program has been launched in eight Halton schools â€" three in Burlington, three in Oakville and one each in Georgetown and Acton â€" involving 2,146 students in Grades 4 to 8. In answers to questionnaires completed by students, 15% of them indicated they have seen bullying on school premises "frequently or all the time. "This is disturbing," said Leggatt. "We have lots of work to do." He said more teachers will be in schoolyards watching for the bully and (See Elder abuse . . . page 17) noted Bennett. ‘"You can‘t expect chilâ€" dren raised in a violent society to grow up to be balanced individuals later." He noted that abuse against children is "innocuous" in that parents often engage in emotional battering rather than physical, apparently regarding the latter as nonâ€"acceptable and the former nonâ€"harmful. He thought both are equally abusive. For instance, dubbing a child as "stupid" or "lazy" or letting him or her know "how you ruined my life" is as damaging as hitting a child because it attacks his sense of safety, he said.
