E) Thoroughly investigate the location. Consider the resale value should you wish to sell in 2â€"3 years? F) Consider the pros and cons of resales vs new homes. Generally, resales have more to offer than a new home (established neighbourhoods, mature trees, character, privacy, schools, etc.). G) Evaluate the i i ished in a new home or in maintaining a resale. Get a qualified home inspector to enlighten you on these if you are buying a resale. What are my options? There are many options available when discussing ® â€" bifocals. One must consider such things as ©@ lifestyle, occupation and hobbies when deciding what will work best for each individual. The traditional bifocals come in a few different styles but they all have a visible line separating your distance correction from your reading correction. The advantage with this style of lens is that you may have a wide reading area. The biggest disadvantage aside from the cosmetics is that this style of lens will not allow for focusing at a midâ€"range distance (arm‘s length). Anyone who has worked on a computer, tried to read sheet music or even played a game of cards wearing traditional bifocals will be familiar with the problems trying to work at this midâ€"distance. s The newer progressives (no line bifocals) provide all the benefits of traditional bifocals but add the feature of continuous clear vision at all distances, including midâ€"range distance (arm‘s length). Progressives have the cosmetic advantage of appearing to be single vision lenses so they never reveal the user wears bifocals. These are, by no means, the only options available. By discussing your lifestyle and visual requirements with your eyeâ€"care professional, we can tailor exactly the right lenses for all your visual needs. A local e â€" Canadian stamp cost 8¢ in 1973, compared to 43¢+GST today ie. 5x more over 20 years. An average house in Toronto, in 1973 cost $40,605, compared to $214,971 today ie. 5x more over 20 yrs. Are you prepared or preparing to pay even 2x more to live when you have to live off your capital at retirement? This seems to be the BIGGEST MOST PROBABLE RISK ... THE LOSS OF YOUR PURCHASING POWER. So, it seems that to risk more for growth to preserve or increase our purchasing power, we must eally understand the tradeâ€"off. Remember, investing is to own assets, good businesses that make the economy grow, create wealth, jobs and happiness in which we all share. Ownership of great companies, known as the equities market, is risky and volatile in the short term. But in the long run, it‘s the greatest creator of real wealth that‘s ever designed. One of the safest ways of doing this is to own well managed and carefully selected mutual funds. Call me I look forward to assisting you. The ®@ former fee structure was limited to $5 per $1,000 of estate value. Some cautions are in order however: NONâ€"REGISTERED FUNDS Ownership on GICs and mutual funds are now more frequently made joint with right of survivorship so that if one owner passes away funds will pass outside of probate to the remaining joint holders of the investment. 1. CDIC coverage combinations with one institution will be reduced if all registrations are in the same joint names. (ie: For two people limit would be $60,000 rather than possible $180,000). 2. Joint registrations, especially with children will reduce flexibility and control of Investments. (ie child falls out of favour; some companies want joint agreements signed by all parties) 5 3. Ensure that proper income tax reporting procedures are followed to avoid attribution problems. REGISTERED FUNDS With riistzzd funds (RRSPs, RRIFs) naming a beneficiary within the plan will allow proceeds to pass to the beneficiary, outside of probate, upon the planholders demise. Be very cautious, however, of the potential income tax repercussions for your estate. If the named beneficiary is a legal spouse or disabled dependent child, a tax free lr,;llover dts permitted to an RRSP or RRIF in the beneficiaries name. Probate is also passe If any other type of beneficiary is designated ie, a charity, nonâ€"legal spouse, funds will pass out of probate to the beneficiary, however the estate will be left with the tax liability since a tax free rollover is not permitted in this case. Tax liabilities can be as high as 50% of the RRSP or RRIF value with a maximum of 30% withheld at source by a financial institution. If the estate does not have any liquid assets with which to pay the tax liability, the executors and heirs may have to dispose of other assets such as the family home to raise funds. (the beneficiary may refuse to part with any of RRSP/RRIF proceeds) In situations where an individual wishes to pass registered funds onto someone who is not eligible for a tax free rollover, it may be prudent to name the estate as beneficiary and let the will provide for funds allocation after all taxes and fees have been paid. Probate fees will apply in this case but it may save a lot of grief for the heirs. In all cases legal advice should be obtained when determining registrations or beneficiaries. !
