As Campbell sees it, that‘s because the burdgeoning new counâ€" try movement just doesn‘t have room for an oldâ€"style country cowâ€" poke stylistically closer to Buck Owens than Billy Ray. "A lot of places won‘t let me in the door because I‘m too traditionâ€" al," says Campbell. "I think country music should be either fiddle or steel (guitar). I‘m the youngest dinosaur around." It might well be that people aren‘t knocking themselves out slapping welcome mats down by their doors, but they don‘t seem to mind handing him awards instead. SCOTT CAMPBELL Since bursting onto the country scene two years ago, the Oakville resident has been raking in the prizes, from Bud Country Talent Search winner to the SOCAN (Society of Canadian Music Publishers) Song of the Year for his G SALE s 559 im ies in A mahoganyâ€"finished presentation 7‘/2"h x 7‘/2"w x 2‘/2"d Reg. $89 hinged lid and a supply compartment. 3‘/2"h x 11‘/2"w x 13‘/2"d Reg. $69 selfâ€"penned country tribute tune An Ole Hillbilly Song. Still, success is in the eye of the beholder, and Campbell‘s eyes are definitely fixed on far grander prizes. So excuse him for a moment, but could that be Nashville calling? "To say I don‘t want to go Stateâ€" side would be a lie. I really believe we can go toeâ€"toâ€"toe with anyone," says Campbell. "But unless you‘re an established traditionalist, no one lets you in. Without being sentimenâ€" J tal, I really love country music and I don‘t like the way it‘s going right now. I guess it‘s a kind of crusade." As far as crusades go, then, _ Campbell is in good company. ~ Country music megaâ€"stars Dwight Yoakim, Randy Travis, Rick Van J Shelton, and Marty Stuart have all forged some pretty decent careers i out of traditional hillbilly roots.
