The basic premise on which the team worked. he continued, was never to design "just another park." "This is a benchmark of park planning for future decades," he said. "We believe the plan is an investment for the long term." Co-sponsored by the the Metrontario Group - the owner and developer of the Uptown Core - and Town of Oakville, the contest was aimed at obtaining a conceptual master plan for the north-Oakville project's central parks area. This time he failed. "I got knocked down down a few pegs on the intelligence scale but please, don't call me stupid," he said. Uppermost in his mind, however, remains Jake and the senseless way his life ended. "Jake wasn't the first to die for this stupid reason," he said. "It's even sadder he won't be the last. Please, please don't drink and drive." Following Donner's lecture one student, visibly moved, said she admired him for standing up on stage and baring his soul. This was in keeping with a comment Donner made earlier that the response to his talks was generally positive. "I get asked lots of questions afterwards," he said. "I even get the occasional hug." The internationally advertised event began in August and was rewarded with 17 proposals sub- mitted for adjudication in Phase I of the competition. These were whittled down to a short-list of four and on Nov. 27 a jury evalu- ated these entries and chose the winning submission. The Town of Oakville con- tributed $40,000 toward the fmal- ists' honorariums while the Metrontario Group financed the costs of planning. administering and running the competition. Each of the Phase ll finalists will receive $10,000. The Uptown Core - which has been part of local planning since the early 1960's - will be an inno- vative community bordered by Highway 5 and centered on Trafalgar Road. Its central parks area of approximately 35 acres will provide a wide range of leisure and civic opportunities, "it was seen then and remains an integral part of the north as the town grows," said Ward 5 coun- cillo.r Liz Behrens, who served on the Uptown Core Parks Competition Steering Group. by Don Wall The management and staff of Meray Motors in Oakville received three early Christmas presents this month with the news that the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada had awarded top prizes to three models of cars sold by the Oakville dealer. The voting by over 50 members of the MAC was done in November and dealers received word of any awards in early December. Meray, with Volvo and Mercedes-Benz as mainstays, learned that the Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon had been given the award Best New Wagon by the automotive writers; the Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan had been named Best New Performance Sedan; and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class had be voted not only Best New Luxury Car but also the prestigious Car of the Year. Seventy vehicles were evaluated on a series of specific criteria and the cars were driven by the journalists over the course of the year and also at the Shannonville Race Track during a four-day weekend in October. The cars were seg- regated into eight different categories from Best Economy and Best Family Sedan to Best Luxury and Best Performance, and an average of seven cars competing in each category. The triumphant news was well-received at Meray by general manager Bill Metcalfe. "Everyone is proud that we offer three of the best products available. It's a great morale-booster." _ In a way, Metcalfe noted. the news came as no surprise to the sales staff at Meray. They have figured they had some of the best of the 1994 class on their premises all along. "We've been saying to people, all you have to do is try one." said Metcalfe, a partner at Meray with Andrew Meray. "When you try one, you know what we've been talking about. Meray opened in Oakville in 1959 as a Mercedes-Benz dealer, and Volvo signed on in 1963. The automobile makers have longstanding reputations for their high-quality engineering, and now these announcements in 1994 confirm that Mercedes and Volvo remain at the head of the class, Metcalfe said. "My wife has a Turbo Wagon. and it's a phe- nomenal car," he noted. "The quality, the speed, the cor nering ability - this is the car the teenagers want to bor row." . The 1994 models have helped boost Volvo sales in Canada by an astonishing 49 per cent this year, and Melcalfe acknowledges his dealership has enjoyed the surge as well. "The last couple of years have been tough in the industry, the last five really, but Volvo has F.Tr"l been up dramatically in sales," the GM report- . _ ed. But in the recent 1994 budget process, the police services board realized that adding $8-million to a budget that was already in deficit when compared to their target, and which they described as "cut to the bone", was unrealis- tic "lt is possible for the police to go with a conventional system," acknowledged police services board chairman Barry Quinn. Quinn suggested that a conven- tional system for police would cost about M-million and only the police should be able to use it.
