Most are poorly maintained and are littered with garbage. In fact, the Halton Police bike patrols refuse to use them! But the outlook is not completely gloomy for cycling in Halton. It appears that small steps are finally More than 300 Super Cities Walkers will meet at Burlington Central Arena for a leisurely stroll along routes from two to 20 kilome- tres through local parks, recreation areas and picturesque city streets. Not surpris- ingly, the law has been met with harsh opposition from many cyclists who feel that the law is both unnecessary and will hinder further development of the sport. being taken by both the province and Halton to ease the tension between cyclists and motorists, as well as, improve cycling safety. Oakville now seriously considers building bicycle lanes when designing new subdivisions. There is also a plan to develop a bike path along the lake- front that would be in conjunction with a provincial move for a bike path stretching across southern Ontario from Kingston to Niagara Falls. As well, the City of Burlington recently approved a one-year experiment that will allow bicycles to be ridden on certain sidewalks. At this point, cyclists are most likely feeling pretty good about them- selves since the law is ï¬nally sitting up and taking notice of their troubles. But not every cyclist is a model citizen.
