Last week, I had the pleasure of samâ€" pling some of the many land tour options available in Alaska and the Yukon to cruise passengers. We travelled by plane, day boat, deluxe motorcoach, narrow gauge railâ€" way, sternwheeler, and helicopter â€" no dogâ€"sleds or skiâ€"dogs! We were hosted by Holland largest tour operator in Alaska â€" operatâ€" ing Westmark Hotels, Grey Line Coaches, the McKinley Explorer train, and a variety of day boat cruisers. An early flight to Fairbanks â€" the golden heart of Alaska â€" gave us a exists because of gold as do most places in Alaska and the Yukon; however, tourism is their future. Almost everywhere you go, the scenery is spectacular! I took 12 rolls of film in a week! Every time we thought the view was ending, another mountain range would appear with snowâ€"topped peaks and mirror reflecting lakes. We travelled from Fairbanks southâ€" east into the Yukon (staying overnight in Beaver Creek and Whitehorse) and then back into southeast Alaska (to Skagway and then the capital, Juneau). cruise on the Chena and Tanana rivers outside Fairbanks with a visit to a reâ€"creâ€" ated Athabascan Indian village, travelâ€" ling on the Alaska Highway through Kluane National Park with many wildlife sightings (moose, dahl sheep, bald eagles, mountain goats) and a stop at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. We left our motor coach after travelâ€" ling from Whitehorse to Fraser, B.C. and boarded the White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railway for the railâ€" ride of a lifetime. The scenery was breathtaking as we America‘s Westours Division, the chance to tour the city and its history. In Skagway, we took the helicopter excursion to the glaciers â€" another breathâ€"taking ride as we flew over mountain passes having sheer drops of thousands of feet on the other side. Each of the Westmark Hotels are unique, comfortable, and reflected the community we visited. Every evening, each community had one or more live theatre shows to choose from, usually on the Klondike or local characters‘ theme. Meals were average to great with local ‘salmon and halibut bakes‘ featured widely. Budget extra for food as costs are higher in the north. When you plan your Alaska cruise, consider extending it with a land tour and enjoy everything the land and sea offers! Submitted by Bob Kerby, Cruise Holidays, 338â€"2077.
