And come December when the rest of us are buying gifts and shovelling snow, 24â€"yearâ€"old Dianne Flynn will be living out of a backpack in the steamy Costa Rican bush. Flynn, who majored in sociology and philosophy at the University of Toronto, has been chosen to be a member of a Youth Challenge International team which will congregate in Costa Rica Dec. 6th. Youth Challenge International is a nonâ€"profit, nonâ€"denomiâ€" national organization which provides young people between the ages of 18 to 25 the opportuniâ€" ty to work in developing countries doing construcâ€" tion work, scientific or environmental research or health care. Potential members send in an application form and those selected attend a selection weekâ€" end â€" Flynn‘s was held at Mansfield Conservation Area recently â€" where they are put to the test, for example, backpacking through the woods to find an appropriate ‘site‘ for a family to build its ‘home.‘ "We sleep out in the bush and save injured victims, carrying them out (of the bush) with all our gear," said F1 ynn. Flynn, who lived in Zambia as a child and has travâ€" elled extensively on her own over the past few years, is looking forward to her threeâ€"month term in Costa Rica with great enthusiasm.
