Three months ago, Keenan â€" an Oakville resident and Grade 12 student at Etobicoke School of the Arts â€" along with eight other stuâ€" dents from the school (ranging in age from 15 to 18) formed the Island â€" Treasures _ Theatre Company, which is currently perâ€" forming children‘s theatre at Toronto Island‘s Lagoon Theatre. Last summer, four of the young actors belonged to a troupe which performed old Italian comedy at the island theatre. When they learned their teacher wasn‘t going to run the theatre again this year, they decided to create, write, direct, and act a series of shows themselves. "Last year, it was such long hours we swore we would never do it again, but once we got to school <we missed it," says Keenan. The hours are even longer this year, but Keenan says the comâ€" mitment is worth it. "The experience of having a run of shows is so good," she says. "It gives you a chance to really work on a character." "You don‘t usually get (that experience) until you become a professional actor." This summer, however, the stuâ€" dents are getting far more than acting experience. "The teacher help extended to letting us use a room after school," says Keenan. In May, the four founding stuâ€" dents wrote a business proposal which they presented to Parks and Property. After receiving approval to run the theatre, they held audiâ€" tions (thereby expanding the group to nine) and then ran biâ€" weekly rehearsals. To raise money, the actors each sold a share in the company to their parâ€" ents and convinced local business people to advertise in their proâ€" grams. After Keenan‘s mother showed them how to thread a sewing machine, the cast threw a costume party and stayed up until 6 a.m. making costumes. Keenan says the results were amazing. The (Photo by Peter McCusker) boys, who did not know how to sew, disappeared into the kitchen and came out several hours later with an elaborate twoâ€"headed dragon costume. During the three months of preparations, all of the cast memâ€" bers were heavily involved in school activities. "It was crazy. It was really hectic at the beginning," says Keenan, who admits the biggest challenge was getting everything ready in time for the dress rehearsal. Despite her concerns, Keenan says opening day went smoothly, and the shows have been well received by the children.
