THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 12, 1994 â€" 1 Take a good look at Germany‘s white wines A few short years ago, one would have had a difficult time finding a dry German white wine in any of our stores. After all, until very recently, German white wines had the just reputation of being, if not sweet, at least semiâ€"sweet. Not so, of course, to the conâ€" sumers in Germany, who drink dry *Off the Alexanian ticket price wines at home. Certainly, the sweetâ€" er wines were readily accepted in the USA, and we, here in Canada, unfortunately were lumped with them, as far as, our tasteâ€"buds were concerned. That all changed a few years back and where there were no dry wines then, today, we have at least six regular listings and quite a CARPET «ORIENTAL RUGS eVINYL Our biggest inâ€"stock selection ever is on sale NOW! VJ C\ L It was just such a dry wine that impressed me this past week, when I had lunch with Peter Sichel in Toronto. We tasted some outstanding wines, some that are not even here in Canada, but it was one of his regâ€" ular listed wines that confirmed itself as a good allâ€"round dinner wine with a variety of foods. The Sichel 1991 Novum is a blended wine that is grown on the steep vineyards overlooking the Rhine River near Nierstein, as well as, from the gently sloping countryâ€" side of the Rheinhessen Region. Germany‘s three classic white grape varieties were selected for this Novum blend. The Silvaner, as the stable grape, lends its roundness to any food, while the Muellerâ€" Thurgau enhances the wine with its flowery bouquet; and finally, the addition of Riesling gives this wine some acidity and a hint of elegance. What I really appreciated about this wine was the fact that it was made exclusively in stainless steel, and no oak had to be used to cover up any shortcomings as is too often the case with some of the other dry dinner wines produced all around the world. Although designated as a dry wine, there is still a slight hint of sweetness which makes it rather pleasurable to drink, rather than a challenge to one‘s palate as can be the case with overly dry wines. It is also this slight sweetness that makes the wine a perfect choice as a comâ€" panion to most foods from fish to poultry and veal, as well as, pasta dishes. I feel that is also one of the few wines which would compliment some of the lighter vegetable dishes so popular over this hot summer season. A "Qualitats" wine â€" the German equivalent of a French AC or an Italian DOC â€" the Novum is proâ€" duced from ripe grapes that give this wine the outstanding extract. This permitted the winemaker to produce a wine which I found fresh and soft on the palate, yet a wine which had enough acidity not only to make it a great companion to foods, but also, give it some eleâ€" gance that entices one to have a glass or two on its own. The time certainly has come when one should take a good look at some of the white wines from Germany. Indeed, there are some dry ones now available, and reâ€"disâ€" covering those wines, it becomes quite apparent that we would like to have all our wines designated as dry, at least on the label. At the same time, we enjoy a wine that has a slight sweetness, but appears dry when balanced to perfection with the acidity. The 1991 Sichel Novum is such a wine, and selling for $8.60 a botâ€" tle under CSPC 228700 at just about any store, I am sure that you will enjoy it as much as I did.
