EWOFLE nahmn’. Ruulnmu Cpl. BACK TO SGHOOE IN SEPTEMBER? “The class showed me that we’re not like everybody else and that the regular rules for childbirth can be thrown out the window,” says Scott. “The class emphasized how much husbands and wives have to work together as a team, and we talked about nursing twins, delivery proce- dures. The class was definiwa nec- essary.” Of course, the father would be able to help, but he also had to go to work every day. Helen quickly real- ized she would need help to cope with the pregnancy and, once the babies were born, at home. A prena- tal course at Sheridan College designed exclusively for people hav- ing multiple births offered Helen the help she needed. hen Helen Scott was 20 weeks pregnant, she found out she was having twins. All at once, her entire outlook on her pregnancy and her life changed. Instead of one crib, she’d need two...in fact, she’d need two of everything, but one thing could not possibly become two â€" the number of mothers these babies would have. The proud parents of 20 twin babies recently gathered for a reunion picnic of their prenatal class for multiple-birth parents at Sheridan College. for women carrying twins,” explains Sarah Upiter, a classmate of Helen, who had twin boys in January. "There is a greater danger of prema- ture birth and cesarean sections. And nursing is more challenging. You have to cope with more crying, especially if they’re hungry at the same time. The prenatal class cov- ered a lot.” For Angela Catapano, who had twin boys prematurely, the social aspect of the class was important. “We’ve all kept in touch and it’s become a nice support group,” she says. “Most of the people who come to the class have fears and concerns,” says Sue Gallaher, herself the mother of twins and the teacher of the Sheridan course. “Regular labor classes focus on labor and comfort. We devote a whole class to prevent- (Photo by Barrie Erskine) ing premature labor. People expecting twins need positive rein- forcement and a good sense of humor.” “Parents of twins agree having twins is twice as nice. “Ignorance is bliss,” says Upiter. “If your twins are your first babies, you just don’t lcnow any better!” Not all twin pregnancies are as drastic as Scott’s. Catapano â€" who had an easier pregnancy - is pregnant again. She does admit, however, this pregnancy is much better than her pregnancy with twins. For many families with twins, the father has to get very involved before the babies are even born. “I wouldn’t wish a twin pregnancy on anyone,” says Scott. “I could barely sit up in the first trimester and at 25 weeks was off work I was in bed the last eight weeks and hospitalized twice because I couldn’t walk. My husband hadtocareformeasiflwasan invalid.” Coping at home takes up an entire class, and mothers of twins agree fathers get more involved because they don’t have a choice. “Dads of twins tend to know their kids really well,” Gallaher says. towards breastfeeding, but for moth- ers of twins, formula is often a reali- ty, according to Gallaher. “At night, I would nurse one, bot- tle feed the other one, sleep an- hour, and then do it all over again,” says Upiter. “Mothers of twins go on very little sleep.” MIDLAND WALWYN BLUE CHIP THINKING "BLUE CHIP THINKING is a trade- mark 01 Midland Walwyn Capital Inc.
