Janice Johnston is President of Adcom Advertising and Design which specializes in residential marketing. Adcom is located at 440 Reynolds St. in Oakville How do you protect an open house? The obvious question: Why on earth would a home seller leave anything that valuable, knowing full well that complete strangers would be wandering through her house all afternoon? "At some point, people just have to exercise a little common sense, but you‘d be amazed at the number of people who don‘t ,"says a local realtor. One can argue, of course, that the realâ€" estate agent could provide some kind of security. But you can‘t really hold the realâ€"estate agent responsible. He or she, after all, is only hired to sell the house, not guard it. Nevertheless, most agents are sensitive to the fact that strangers are coming through your front door; a good agent will make an effort to keep visiting couples together. Good options are hard to find Toronto suburb, posing as home buyers. One distracted the realâ€"estate agent while the other roamed freely around the house. They left together. A few days later, the owner of the house discovered $9,000 worth of jewelry missâ€" ing, and became the latest victim of a rash of larcenies. "I‘ve been on openâ€"house tours and seen jewelry sitting out", she said. "I‘ve seen cash just sitting on dressers. I‘m totally amazed." Realâ€"estate agents have no idea who is coming through the house because prospective buyers don‘t have to produce identification. Homeowner caution is the key The alternatives to taking responsibility for your own possessions are sometimes distasteful to many prospective buyers. They‘re asked to sign in and register, but they don‘t have to produce a driver‘s license or any other form of identification. Realâ€"estate agents, however, would chafe at the notion of having to "card" everyone coming through the door like a nightclub bouncer. Many people believe agents should limit the number of people who can enter the property. That way, they‘d have better control. But realistically speaking, buyers probably wouldn‘t appreciate being locked outside until the agent finished with the couple ahead of them. And sellers would scream if they saw potential buyers drive away rather than wait for the next tour. It‘s like identifying shoplifters. Watch out for people wearing bulky coats, or who carry big bags or briefcases around as they go through the house. The best anyone can hope for is a heightened sense of awareness. Watch out for people who don‘t seem to ask the right kinds of questions...who don‘t seem to be interested in the kinds of things people buying a house should be interested in. But, even the best of efforts of realty agents â€" and police â€" can be undone by careless home sellers.
