Tasting my way through countless indifferent wines, I too had become somewhat disillusioned. Although there are some outstanding wines from S.A. to be found, such wines selâ€" dom reached the stores here and are mostly available only from the importers. Perhaps, this is about to change soon, as some pretty good wines from such quality producers as Simonsig and a few others are desâ€" tined to become regular listings. Just this past week, I had the opportunity to sample some very fine wines from the Nederburg Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, and when they become available in Ontario as regular listings, I certainly would give them my recommendaâ€" tions. This spring, as the wines from South Africa made their way back into Canada, we were literally deluged with a flood of rather ordinary and costly wines. I suppose that some proâ€" ducers from Africa thought that we were just waiting for them and would welcome the wines from the past with open arms. I surprised myself while tasting their Chardonnays. Liking two out of three is some achievement for me, as I am tired of the many indifferent and often bad Chardonnays which are passed off as true varietals. Then, there were some great Pinotage wines, typical only to South Africa, and two or three super Cabernet Sauvignons which, in my opinion, rivaled the best from Australia and California. In the meantime, I suggest that you wander into your local Vintages and take a look at some of their Disillusioned with South African wines There are still a few spaces left and anybody interested must call the Town of Oakville at 338â€"4250 and mention "Introduction to the World of Wine" to register. The complete course, including the tastings, is Summer Clearance Sales, which have become effective August 29th. You may just be able to find a bottle of Vinho Verde 1991 from Casa De Sezim for $5.95. This very dry white wine from Portugal is an excellent companion to most seafoods. From Switzerland, you may try the Fechy Grand Terre â€" a dry white, for $12.85. Produced from the Chasselas grapes, grown near Lake Geneva, here is your chance to try a Swiss wine which is not overly overpriced. From the Rhone in France, I can suggest the dry red 1989 Chateauneufâ€"duâ€"Pape from Domaine de Biscarelle for $13.95. Some of the wines mentioned may be sold out by the time you get there, but take a look around as there are a few other attractive wines on sale. Vintages is located at Sherwood Forest Mall, 1900 Dundas Hwy., in Mississauga. In Oakville, visit the store in the Oakville Town Centre, on Dorval Drive; and in Burlington, there should be some wines at Fairwood Centre, 3350 Fairview St. In conjunction with the Oakville Parks and Recreation Department, I will be conducting an eightâ€"week course on wine. Starting Oct. 4th, the course runs every Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m.
