The Blues â€" who were without ace pitcher Tim San Andres who had hurt his arm in last month‘s memorable Central Ontario Baseball Association (COBA) battle against the crossâ€" town rival Reds â€" were defeated 9â€"3 by Welland and 4â€"0 by Sarnia to bow out of the double knockâ€"out competition. The Oakville A‘s major pee wee ‘Blue‘ team ran into some tough luck and a sore arm as they were bounced out in two straight games at the allâ€"Ontario championships in Stoney Creek on the weekend. Each team had their ace on the hill with the Reds Tyler Hosick going against the Blues Tim San Andres. Hosick, due to pitching restrictions, could only pitch five frames. In the midâ€"August tournament, the Oakville Blues defeated the Oakville Reds 2â€"1 in a thrilling final game. After staving off elimination twice in the douâ€" ble knockâ€"out tournament the Red squad was tired but willing and ready to play. The game was scoreless until the Reds Shaun Benay smashed a San Andres fastball for a solo homer in the second inning. The score held until the fourth when San Andres tied it up with a homer of his own. San Andres shut down the Reds allowing only two more hits and two walks. The Blues managed to load the bases in the seventh and cash the go ahead run with a sinâ€" gle to right to claim the victory. The Blues knocked off Brampton Royals 6â€"5 in their tournament opener behind San Andres top notch pitching. Oakville Red knocked off Cawthra 3â€"0 for their first win in the double knock out tournament. Hosick pitched a great game and Bobby Chapelle blasted a double to Blues bow out at the provincials The highlight, he said, was the unprecedented meeting of the two Oakville teams for the COBA double ‘AA‘ championship which, he said, was a tribute to the overall strength of minor ball in Oakville. Jeff Ferguson managed a one out pinchâ€"hit single. Pinch runner Brad Guy stole second. Two infield singles set the stage for the winning hit by Adam Granlund. Coach Mel San Andrades said it was "a hell of a season for the kids." WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1994 PAGE 10 IRUN C 2L(E Fortunately for Oakville, Gord Scott was equal to the task as he threw a oneâ€"hitter with 10 strikeouts. In addition, he scored the game‘s lone run in the third inning when he doubled and was knocked in by Kevin Wyatt. Owen Sound threatened to score only twice. In the fourth inning, they had a man on second with two out when the batter hit what looked to be a certain double. First baseman Jeff Lethbridge, however, made a sensational diving grab to record the final out of the inning. Oakville captured the championship with a nailâ€"biting 1â€"0 win over heavily favored Owen Sound, who are anchored by Trevor Wardell, considered by many to be the best intermediate pitcher in Ontario. Oakville team knocks off Ontario champs Against Cawthra, the Reds got super pitching from Marc Walton and Peter Kissel. Kissel added four hits with a double and Jonathan Cooke slammed a double and two singles. The two Oakville teams hooked up in a preâ€" liminary round game won by the Blues 4â€"2. Hosick and San Andres were on the hill. Later that day the Reds knocked Cawthra out of the tournament with an 8â€"3 win which set up another contest with their town counterparts. They responded with an inspiring 8â€"1 win. Owen Sound threatened again in the bottom ~SPORTS THE O/ In the quarterâ€"finals, Crila Plastic knocked off Walter‘s Falls by a score of 7â€"3. The game was tight until the fifth inning when Oakville explodâ€" ed for four runs. Brian Prowse led off the inning with an astounding line drive blast that cleared the beer garden tent beyond the centreâ€"field fence. In earlier action, Oakville defeated St. Thomas 5â€"0. Gord Scott tossed a noâ€"hitter and was a mere two walks away from a perfect game. Kevin Wyatt led the way offensively with two key hits. Jeff Foster and Tom Chater also conâ€" tributed key hits while Brian Prowse had a specâ€" tacular catch in the outfield. of the seventh when they were able to sacrifice their leadâ€"off hitter to second base. With one out, Gord Scott bore down and struck out the numâ€" berâ€"three hitter. Then, having wisely walked the cleanâ€"up hitter, Scott got the last batter to ground out weakly to first base to end the game. Hosick knocked in a pair in the second with a single, lead off hitter Rob Kapuscinski was three for four with two doubles and Cooke smashed his first homer of the year off the top of the fence in left centre. They responded with an inspiring 8â€"1 win. Hosick started for the Reds but was pulled after two frames and an early lead so he could pitch in a deciding game if necessary. The Blues held San Andres back for the final.
