They came to protest violence against women, to mourn for those who have been victims, and to demand change. They came by the hundreds and they took back the night. Toddlers, teenagers, mothers, and elderly women all gathered in the darkness of Burlington‘s Central Park, Thursday night, to take part in Halton‘s fourth annual â€" Take Back the Night â€" march. "I‘m here because I don‘t want to get hurt," said Grade 10 student Tracy Brouwer simply. "I‘m here because I think it‘s important that we stand up for our right to walk the streets at night," added classmate Sarah Cownley. With candles aloft, the women marched down New Street to City Hall, chanting in unison a demand for freedom from abuse and fear. Then, they returned to the darkâ€" ness of the park, where few would feel safe most nights, and spoke of their hopes for a safer future. "Family â€" the cradle of violence and the harbinger of hope.
