THE OAKVILLE BEAVER "Your Community Shopping Centre" (Continued from page 1) Stokes says he has many friends who are envious of his property which combines a central location with a very private natural setting. "The beauty of this house is the light and the privacy," Stokes adds. * All of the rooms have big, full " All of the rooms have big, full windows that take advantage of the view. I have to admit, this is really my dream house." It was the ravine setting, in fact, which caused such a stir when the house was originally under conâ€" struction. The builder, who hapâ€" pened to be a youthful chap named Jim Snow who was to later serve many years as MPP for Oakville, was told by many people that the lot was simply no good to build on. Mr. Snow, who was convinced otherâ€" wise, hired local architect Dan Dunlop (of the firm Farrow, Dunlop), to come up with a special design that would accommodate the steep, sloping setting. This is what the critics of 40 years ago had to say about the finâ€" ished product: "The architects and builders of the Home of Today had a building site to work with which gave them some tough problems, but also offered them some opportuâ€" nities for creating a home of unusuâ€" al scenic attractions. That they solved the problems and took full advantage of the opportunities will be quite apparent to those who visit this unique dwelling." SOUTH SERVICE RD Recalling the project of 40 years ago, Jim Snow says the house was very unusual for its day, and was the subject of quite a substantial advertising campaign. The design, although unique to this part of the country at the time, was based on designs often used in British Columbia with its sloping, mounâ€" Rescue bids were Meanwhile, Van K reached inside and tried t trapped youth to safety. the youth was in shock ar both rescue attempts, he s: Meanwhile, despite extinguishers, the car cor burn. "We lost him a number of times inside the car among the flames," said Van Koeverden. Finally, on Van Koeverden‘s third attempt the youth realized his danger and reached for help through the flames. "I saw his hair go on fire and his skin peel back," said Van CROSS AVE. , Van Koeverden and tried to pull the espite the fire car continued to ;. However, and resisted said. Ironically, despite the publicity surrounding the project, the home wasn‘t an immediate seller, and Jim Snow and his wife Barbara ended up living in the house for the first five years. "It really was a great house," says Snow. "All of the rooms, even the bedrooms and the family room downstairs, were creatâ€" ed with full windows because of the slope of the lot, so it really had great views." In fact, the only drawâ€" back that Snow recalls is trying to cut the substantial lawn with one foot on the upgrade and one foot on the downgrade. "You really needed to have one leg longer than the other," he laughs. tainous terrain. Snow admits that the home was | a tough one to tackle because the land sloped so sharply, but with some contour changes and clevér design, they were able to create a unique fourâ€"level plan. In keeping with its B.C. design, the upper part of the exterior was trimmed in vertiâ€" cal cedar siding with a natural oil finish, and the roof deck was conâ€" structed of tongueâ€"andâ€"groove B.C. fir planks which were then topped with insulation and finished off with cedar shingles. As an indicator of just how innoâ€" vative the home looked for its day, Snow recalls that he was shocked one day to find his house promiâ€" nently displayed on theâ€"cover o some Ford of Canada promotiona material for its new line of 195 Meteors. "I don‘t know when the took the picture," he says, " bu they must have thought the hous looked pretty good, because the; had two of their new Meteor parked right in my driveway." Koeverden. "For a moment I wasn sure if I should grab him. Then‘ saw his arm and grabbed it." _ By now Van Koeverden wa exhausted and overcome by smoke "I‘m allergic to smoke," he said "I can‘t even stand a cigaretts around me." He fell backwards ground while others q youth to safety. Seconds after the youth wa freed, the car blew up. "I was on the ground crawlin backwards when the car blew," sai Van Koeverden.
