Dear Sir: When you become a school trustee, you are working for the citiâ€" zens you represenet. You do not "work" for the Halton Board of Education as your Nov. 9th front page article says (No conflict in It‘s a funny sort of camaraderie, really. We have talked to about a million dog owners in the past few months since Theo joined the chaos that is our family. All have told us just exactly what we should do with our dog â€" "socialize, socialize" â€" and also, what they believe is the exact breed of the dog. PAUL HARTFORD INVESTMENT ADVISOR (§3) NESBITT BURNS Trustees ‘work‘ for electorate I guess by that, I wonder if there are other reasons for heading out at the crack of dawn to wade through goose droppings; particularly with the constant fear of suddenly being lashed by the retractable leash. I wonder if the strange, oddly endearing world of dog ownership is more than just about man‘s best friend. We dog owners are a curious lot. Leashes in hand, we stand in a semiâ€" cifcle in some park or another and chat casually and watch as the dogs run here and there. It seems about the only place I know where a group of strangers can talk amiably all the while holding a bag of manure. Why do we do this? Ostensibly, it‘s for Fido. But since we have joined the ranks of dog owners in the past few months, November 16, 1994 t might as well be a uniform; E this flutter of plastic out of 4 every pocket as all these hardy souls wander aimlessly about local parks at the crack of dawn stooping and scooping in a sea of goose droppings. FOR THE ANN MULVALE FLECTION CAMPAIGN Our puppy is the one who, tongue hanging out, tail wagging ecstatically, bounds happily towards other more dignified canines who merely want to do their business in a park and then leave demurely and quietly. Theo tends to hurl herself at this innocent soul in blissful abanâ€" But we still think Theo is one pretty good mutt, even if she tries unsuccessfully to burrow herself under beds and bark idiotically at nothing; even if she digs out the garâ€" den; eats the favorite stuffed animal; and sheds all over my son‘s prized bedroom carpet. One day, a woman holding a purebred something or other, peered hesitantly at Theo and asked about the breed. Theo, busy wagging her tail furiously as though to convince this doggie snob she‘s a prize, looked up expectantly, friendly, even in the face of snobbery. The woman left the park, unimpressed. Our park is practically a breeding ground for dogs. One man leads his two dogs into the park with all the pride of leading royalty. Another older man speaks decisively of his own old Spaniel â€" how she "wouldn‘t win any prizes", but then visibly, beams with pride when we praise her looks and her gentle disâ€" position. I think it has to be with a shared love of animals and a need to talk about real, tangible stuff that has history and personality...like dogs. One thing is clear â€" people love to talk about dogs.
