Highâ€"tech education may start by JK By KATHY YANCHUS Oakville Beaver Staff Start them _ young _ 18 Superintendent of Education Services Graeme Barrett‘ s approach. Incorporating technological aspects in everyday curriculum gives children, even those as young as Junior Kindergarten age, the tools to manage technology as secâ€" ond nature. "The evidence is clear that early involvement sets the stage for early learning," said Barrett told trustees Thursday night during his presentaâ€" tion on a long range plan for Technological Education which incorporates JK to Grade 8. "As a society we have to have an approach to technology that illusâ€" trates its importance." If students are to successfully make the transition from school to workforce, "the education system must ensure that all graduates are technologically competent," he said. Barrett‘s plan is designed to proâ€" vide technological equipment for students â€" including such items as Duplo and z â€" staff training and facility renovations, at a cost of more than $400,000 in each of the next five years. Research indicates a majority of teachers feel technology is an important aspect of education and they would teach more of it, if they had tools at their disposal, said Barrett. "Things are changing...Students,J parents and educators need a wake~ up call. Sometimes we lose site Ofl educational requirements. Jobs are going unfilled because skills don‘t meet available jobs," said Barrett. > _ _As the next century approaches, more jobs are going to require speâ€" cific technological competencies, he said The teaching strategy in this ag grouping would be imerdisciplinar)a incorporating technology into th current curriculum and not a sepaâ€" rate program, explained Barrett. ‘ The integration of technology into classroom study would hely develop three basic skills: creativity problemâ€"solving and critical think‘ ing, he added.
