ON DUNDAS, NORTH SIDE. presents VISA host Peter Gzowski, there is one from two cyclists in their seventies. These two intrepid souls often pedal 50 or 60 miles with no motel in sight. What keeps them going? Their handy twoâ€"litre plastic Coke bottle full 2273 BR In this letter, just one of the hunâ€" dreds contained in the fifth collection from the popular CBC radio program Morningside, Frances Gammon tells the funny story of how she and her cycling partner were asked at a border crossing if they carried liquor or cigarettes by a sternâ€"faced customs official. "...I did not lie. I gave her a steadfast look and said, "Do you think that old ladies like us would have such stuff? I trust she felt ashamed for askâ€" ing..." The senior then mentions as an aside that all their gear is stored in the two panniers on the back of their bikes. "‘They are real stories of real lives of people who are sitting around the kitchen table just pouring out their hearts," he explained. What sets this letter apart is typical of all of the letters contained in this collection â€" it‘s honest, real quality, according to Gzowski. Speaking a few minutes off the air from Morningside‘s studio, Gzowski said the letters define the show. ‘"‘They are the fabric of the show," he said, adding the letters also act as a constant source of story ideas. The popular radio host will be signing his latest book at Quest Booksellers on Friday, Nov. 25th, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Since he joined Morningside 12 years ago, Gzowski has made a point of reading letters on the air, along with coâ€"host of the correspondence segâ€" ment, Shelagh Rogers. of sherry. In fact, as they sit resting in a ditch, it‘s often the one thing that gets them up and going. In many ways, it was the insistence on involving the listeners from the word go that has influenced other radio programs. Gzowski points out that while letters can be heard on the air more and more today, it wasn‘t always that way. And while he says he has talked to all sorts of fascinating, unusual people who can "paddle with one arm from Nova Scotia to the Amazon," he also speaks to average people about the quirky details of life. A longâ€"time supporter of literacy, Gzowski speaks to many writers both on and off the air, as well as, hosting about 15 annual golf tournaments that take him across the country and raise funds for literacy. Not only are there hundreds of letâ€" ters to pour through in this fifth collecâ€" tion, there are also snippets of converâ€" sations with poets, his own essays, a women‘s thoughts on living with canâ€" cer, a quirky chapter on fountain pens, a conversation with Generation Xâ€"ers, as well as, bits and pieces from the program. It is organized into 20 chapâ€" Despite a demanding three hours on the air, which is the daily time slot for Mormningside, Gzowski off the air is very much as he is on the air â€"â€" affaâ€" ble, quick, funny. Talking of the need to get up in the middle of the night â€" Gzowski gets up at 3 a.m. every morning â€" he jokes that he isn‘t much company after 9 at night. the solitude at 3 a.m., as well as, the time to get prepared for the morning‘s show. â€""I haven‘t got much of a social life," he says. But he says he enjoys The listeners to Morningside are an interesting, varied lot. Many of them, according to Gzowski, take a "propriâ€" etal" view towards the show. "They let me know very quickly if I have said something wrong, or if L am getting too big for my britches. They even tell me when, the odd time,â€" I get something right."
