The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 3, 2006 - 29 Comic Vision has serious goal Tonight, Oakville and Burlington residents will gather for great laughs for a great cause at Comic Vision, a fundraiser in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. This show is particularly meaningful to local residents because it was cofounded by former Oakville and now Burlington resident, Ann Morrison and her comic friend, Meg Soper of Oakville, after Morrison's son, Gavin, was diagnosed with a degenerated eye disease at age five. Gavin has retinitis pigmentosa (RP), an eye disease in which the peripheral vision, night vision, colour and depth perception are all affected. When she learned of Gavin's condition, Soper suggested laughter could make a difference. "We're very pleased to present this show in Oakville because of the tremendous interest and support from the community, many of whom know someone affected by an eye disease," said Morrison, Manager of Annual Giving at the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Last year, Comic Vision in Oakville and Toronto raised a combined $174,000 for The Foundation Fighting Blindness to support vision research. Since its inception, Comic Vision has raised approximately $290,000, contributing to discoveries into the causes of blindness and bringing Canadian researchers closer to finding treatments and cures. Researchers anticipate that a cure for some forms of hereditary blindness could be discovered within as few as five years. The talented Canadian headliner for Comic Vision 2006 is Gerry Dee, who currently splits his time between living in Los Angeles and Toronto. Dee is a Scarborough native who spent 10 years as a high-school phys-ed teacher before making the move to Hollywood in 2003. His supporting cast at Comic Vision includes fellow colourful Canadian comics, Gord Paytner, Evan Carter and Soper. Comic Vision is tonight, Wednesday May 3, at 7 p.m. at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd.
