Artscene Oakville Beaver · FRIDAY, MAY 5, 2006 33 Waterfront Festival presents Bedouin Soundclash and Philosopher Kings Bedouin Soundclash and The Philosopher Kings will perform at the 15th annual Oakville Waterfront Festival. Bedouin Soundclash will take the stage Friday, June 23 and The Philosopher Kings will follow on Saturday, June 24. Winner of the 2006 JUNO for New Group of the Year, Bedouin Soundclash has received glowing acclaim for their seductive and innovative fusion of reggae, rock, punk and soul. The band exploded onto commercial radio and video stations across Canada last year with the reggae-tinged smash, When The Night Feels My Song, which garnered a Single of the Year nomination at the 2006 JUNOs. Ford's Saturday Night concert features a sensual, soulful mainstay of the Canadian music scene. The Philosopher Kings need little introduction, having just released their fourth album and acquiring multiple Top 10 radio hits, numerous industry award nominations and sold-out concert venues across the country over the years. Dominating the radio waves with such chart-topping singles as Hurts To Love You, If I Ever Lose This Heaven, and most recently Castles in the Sand, the group has toured from Brazil to Japan. On Sunday June 25, the Festival celebrates Family Day with the magical world of Majinx, Canadian Champions of Magic. Lawrence, Cynthia and their children Nathaniel and Zadia make up the cast of Majinx and have been fondly hailed as Canada's First Family of Magic. Through their artful presentation, the world of magic and illusion becomes one of grand spectacle and wonder. This talented team has produced the most visually colourful and exciting illusion show currently on the market. Nothing elementary about Elementary Art Show By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF More than 40 busloads of kids from schools in the region visited Oakwood Public School Tuesday for the 3rd annual Halton Elementary Art Show it was a busy scene to say the least. "It's been a really super turnout," said Oakwood educational assistant and show organizer, Ene-Mai Fortune. "This show is basically to encourage art in schools, where they often make cuts. It just shows that the kids need that creative relief." Art made by students from Kindergarten through Grade 8 from 36 Halton schools was on display in Oakwood's gym and library for the one-day show, and the school also used the hallways as galleries for art created by its own students. "The kids have been really excited to see what other kids can do," said Fortune. "They'll look at the label (next to the artwork) and go, `a Grade 1 did this? Wow!'" Sean Buswell and Matt Mills of Burlington's Clarksdale Public School were among hundreds of students touring through Oakwood and checking out the art Tuesday. "It's all very good," said Mills, 11. "I'm impressed by what these little kids can do." Both he and Buswell agreed that a pencil drawing of Kiss lead singer, Gene Simmons, was the highlight of the show. "I'm fascinated that a Grade 8 can draw Gene Simmons," Mills said of the work, which was drawn by Tecumseh Public School student, Evan Short. "That's a really good picture," added Buswell. Choosing a favourite piece of art and drawing it on the back of a student response booklet was part of the exercise at Oakwood, explained Fortune. "It's almost like a scavenger hunt, they have to find a painting with warm colours, primary colours, and other exercises. Rather than just kind of wandering aimlessly, they have a purpose," she said, smiling. Halton schools were invited to enter up to 15 works in the show, which included everything from pencil drawings to painting, pastels, masks, charcoal sketches, clay and even a TV claymation display, which Mills and Buswell contributed to.
