www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 26, 2006 - 13 Whole Foods day for OPCC Wheels to Meals opens at Iroquois Ridge The Oakville Parent Child Centre (OPCC) expansion campaign will receive a significant boost today. Five percent of today's sales, from 8 a.m. 9 p.m., at Whole Foods Market, 301 Cornwall Rd., will be donated to the OPCC. Scotia Bank has committed to matching the funds raised through this initiative and will also have its volunteers on hand to assist with a number of activities planned and run by OPCC, including a sing-along for children at 10 a.m., crafts at 2 p.m., and story time at 5 p.m. Funds raised will be used to support the OPCC's newly renovated main site at 461 North Service Rd, which opened on July 1. The new location provides the OPCC with a nursery school and program rooms that are accessible and at ground level. It replaced the location on Kerr Street, which it occupied for the past 19 years but outgrew. Additional space will increase its capacity to respond to long wait lists and introduce new programs and upgrade existing services. OPCC is a registered charitable organization founded in 1980 that enables parents to introduce early learning to their children, to participate in activities with them, and to learn about parenting in a supportive and friendly place. These early learning opportunities help children develop cognitive and social skills and prepare them to step into the challenging experiences of education and a productive life beyond. It also offers information, support, referrals, education and resources. Last year, OPCC served 1,949 families and experienced 16,000 parent and 19,500 children visits in over 40 programs. It is an Ontario Early Years Centre and a member agency of the United Way of Oakville. Wheels to Meals has moved to the Iroquois Ridge Older Adult Centre located in the Iroquois Ridge Community Centre. This newly formed Wheels to Meals program has openings. Wheels to Meals is a congregate dining program for older, frail seniors who may not otherwise have an opportunity to socialize with their peers. Seniors are picked up at their homes by volunteer drivers and brought to the Centre Thursdays at 11 a.m. where other volunteers greet them and serve a prepared, hot lunch. Following lunch, the NEW GROUP: The first Wheels to Meals volunteers and clients at the Iroquois Ridge Older Adult Centre at the Iroquois Ridge Community Centre are from left, Eileen Nolan (seated),Alice Robinson (standing), Peggy Bremner (seated), Elizabeth McCarville (standing), Joyce Son Kee (seated), Margaret Beckett (standing) and Jean Franklin (seated). clients participate in a gentle exercise program and then a social time of games and cards to approximately 2 p.m., when the volunteer drivers take them home.
