10 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 28, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com HOT Kits easy way to get access to variety SUMMER BUYS! The Oakville Public Library now offers book club kits. These kits are an easy, inexpensive way for you and your club members to access a wide variety of books perfect for book clubs. Each kit contains 10 books, eliminating the need for each club member to purchase her/his own copy, and kits have an extended loan period (six weeks) to allow enough time for reading and discussion. "The kits make things easy," says Ruth Borst, Oakville Public Library Adult Librarian. "Multiple copies save having to wait and share, and the summaries that are included contain enough information and questions to get a good discussion started." Simply check out the kit on your library card as you would any other item, enjoy, and return when your club is finished with it. To search for book club kits, go to the library's on-line catalogue and in Search, do a Title search for Book Club Kit. Borst says belonging to a book club is informative and fun. "And you get to spend time with people who also love books," she adds. Two kits are available for each of the following titles (except where noted): 2003 Nissan 350Z Stk#G6050A $35,988 PAYMENT/INTEREST `til NO 2007 * 2005 Nissan Maxima Stk#91390 $28,990 SAVINGS 2003 Nissan Murano Stk#91415 Markdown inventory liquidation up to FINAL HURRY! Some tips for holding a great book club meeting: · Make people comfortable as they arrive greet them with a smile. · Come prepared bring a brief biography of the writer, some background information on the book, some critical comments for discussion, and think up some questions and discussion points before the meeting to get the conversation started. Ask open-ended questions and allow the conversation to develop and flow. · Ice-breaker questions at the start of the meeting can include asking members to rate the book on a scale of one to 10. Asking this same question at the end of the evening can produce interesting results, as the discussion often causes participants to re-evaluate their initial position. · If discussion gets bogged down, some possible "jump start" questions include asking members what they would change about the book if they had written it, or asking them to come up with a cast for an imaginary film version. · Be enthusiastic about the book if you possibly can, but remember that disliking a book is a perfectly valid response too, and that diametrically opposed viewpoints often produce the most interesting discussions. · Offer everyone the opportunity to share their views, but don't force shy people to talk if they don't want to. · And remember at all times it isn't school! Keep it focused on the book and above all, keep it fun. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library 2005 Nissan XTrail SE Stk#91304 Now 799 * $26,850 Reclina-Rocker® Chaise Recliner Anderson Reclina-Rest® Rocker Recliner Now $399 * Watermelon eating contest Join in Longo's Annual Watermelon Eating Contest to be held Saturday, July 29 at Longo's Oakville.
