www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 28, 2006 - 27 Sheridan grads excited about their new flick Poker Night Interactive exhibit at Crawford Lake Crawford Lake Conservation Area is hosting an interactive exhibit that wraps up this weekend. Crawford Lake through the Eyes of an Artist isn't your typical gallery show this show lives and breathes. Local artists Linda Roe, Catherine Lorraway, Mae Giroux, Barbara VanSickle, Barbara Ariss, Gisele Bes Correia and Jennifer Osborn are on site creating new pieces inspired by Crawford Lake. Visitors will be able to watch the artists capture the beauty of the park while wandering the grounds, which include a 15th century Iroquoian Village and more than 400 hectares of woodlands. With the cost of admission, visitors will be able to interact with the artists and learn how an artist practices his or her craft as they work in studio in the renovated Gathering Place facility. Existing works by the artists will also be on display and for sale. Crawford Lake Conservation Area is located at the corner of Steeles Ave. and Guelph Line, 15 kilometres north of the QEW and five kms south of the 401. It's a funny and tense situation with all the pimps and thugs." A drop-in by mom's church friend, a nosy next-door neighbour who gets in on the card game and a Martyobsessed 15-year-old all add to the action. "Crazy is a good way to describe it and funny," said Zahalan, who added neighbours and area councillors have been both helpful and understanding with regards to the project. Poker Night is the first feature film John and Zahalan have produced through High C Productions Inc., which they founded in 2005. Both Sheridan College grads, they have more than 40 years of experience between them in the entertainment industry. John, who has a background in acting, writing and producing, has produced theatre shows including A Chorus Line and Guys & Dolls, starred in the TV show "The industry has Dallas, and has appeared in a been so up and down, number of commercials, TV so we both wanted to series and feature films, create our own work. including Tommy Boy with We've put our own Chris Farley. Zahalan, the head of the money into this, so commercial vocal depart- this is us giving a ment in the music theatre great leap of faith." program at Sheridan College, is a Juno-nominated Producer artist with three albums Mary-Lu Zahalan under her belt, in addition to TV and film acting. Some of her TV credits include Ready or Not, Top Cops and Missing Treasures. "The industry has been so up and down, so we both wanted to create our own work," said Zahalan, who noted they'll be approaching film and comedy festivals with the finished product. "We've put our own money into this, so this is us giving a great leap of faith." One of the reasons they're able to fund the project is because Poker Night is a Toronto Indie Production (TIP), a program that allows eligible Canadian producers to hire performers at a reduced rate in order to support the Canadian film industry. "These actors read the script, loved it and decided they wanted to be part of our production," said Zahalan, who noted about 60 people, including 40 in production, are involved in the making of Poker Night. "They're literally making a couple hundred (dollars) a day instead of a couple thousand a day." Many of the actors they've managed to get on board have Hollywood credits to their names including Four Brothers, American Pie and Get Rich or Die Trying. "We managed to get some great Canadian talent. Some of the people just blew our minds, we couldn't believe it," said Zahalan. The Poker Night cast includes Saw III's Dylan Trowbridge as Marty, Jennifer Miller of American Pie as Portia, one of the escorts, and Romeo Must Die's Benz Antoine as Coolie Bear, the pimp. "We're so happy with the Canadian talent we have on board, and we're so excited about everything coming together," said Zahalan. "We've been talking about the movie for five months, and now we're finally living it." For more on High C Productions, visit www.highcproductions.com.
