34 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 28, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com www.oakvillebeaver.com GREAT SCOTS: Glasgow Rangers FC representatives Andy Kennedy, David Thorburn, Peter Dennison and William Gilogley (pictured left to right) have attended Oakville Soccer Club camps the past two weeks and will hold their own Glasgow Rangers camp next week at Shell Park. The Scots will also hold a coaching clinic next week. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Scottish coaches assess local soccer talent David Thorburn and the Glasgow Rangers FC are in Oakville these days, hoping to catch a glimpse of their future. Thorburn and three other representatives of the Bank of Scotland Premier League soccer squad have attended Oakville Soccer Club camps the past two weeks at Shell Park, lending their THE CONSERVATION ZONE expertise to a girls elite camp as well as a general one. They will conduct their Glasgow Rangers camp next week, with full days of instruction for local players age seven and older, and will hold a coaching clinic Wednesday and Thursday. "One of the most important things is to identify talent," said Thorburn, a scout with the Rangers. "If we can find somebody with the (attributes and skills) you need for a soccer player, he's got a chance to make it (in premier leagues overseas)." Thorburn said one of the biggest things he and Andy Kennedy, Peter Dennison and William Gilogley are trying to impress upon kids is the fact that a professional soccer career can be as lucrative in Europe as hockey or baseball careers are in North America. "People can make just as much as your top ice hockey players in Scotland," he said. "Some people make $100,000 a week or more. The money's there, but they have to go abroad." Noting he's been impressed with the OSC and its head coach/technical director, Brett Mosen, Thorburn said he and the Rangers have also focused on providing a fun and informative atmosphere for players of all skill levels. Carlo Cannovan, the OSC's camp director, said the Scottish instructors have been well received. "(The kids) love them," he said with a laugh. "They can't understand them, but they love them." The coaching clinic will feature an on-field session Wednesday from 6:308:30 p.m. at Pine Glen Field as well as a classroom session Thursday from 8-10 p.m. at the Oakville Soccer Club's office. Any OSC coaches can attend either clinic, or both, but advance registration is required. For more information, contact the Oakville Soccer Club at 905849-4436.
