22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 29, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Squirt Angels continue gold rush in Brampton After winning its invitational fastpitch tournament earlier this month in Oakville (see page 21), the Oakville Angels squirt I team continued its dominant play at a Brampton competition. Oakville claimed the championship, winning six of its seven games and outscoring its opponents by a 44-3 margin. The pitching staff of Brittany Parkes (3-1 at the tournament) and Alex Sagl (3-0) combined for five shutouts while catchers Novz Bozinoski, Hilary Dawe and Crystal Marentette were outstanding behind the plate, throwing out six baserunners attempting to steal. Bozinoski also made several diving catches on bunt attempts. In the tournament final, Oakville downed Guelph 8-1, avenging a 2-1 loss to Guelph during the round-robin. Parkes singled home Jennifer Wilcox in the first inning to give the Angels an early lead, with Sagl, Wilcox, Bozinoski and Parkes collecting two-out hits in a three-run third. Oakville added single runs in the fourth and sixth frames, then put the game away with a two-run rally in the seventh. Jennifer Simpson stroked a single and a double in the win, with Sagl tossing a complete-game two-hitter. The Angels earned their spot in the final with a 6-0 triumph over Whitby. Parkes' lead-off double in the second inning was cashed in with an RBI groundout by Dawe, and Dana Ball singled later in the inning to score Marentette and give the Angels a 2-0 advantage. Dawe added a triple later in the game and went on to score the Angels' final run. Parkes pitched five innings, yielding four hits, to collect the win. In round-robin action, Parkes tossed a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Mississauga North. The Angels also defeated Brampton 6-0, Whitby 15-0 -- sparked by Abbey Fong's two hits and two RBI -- and Halton Hills 3-0. Oakville will host the Peel/Halton Squirt Division I and II playoffs next month at Trafalgar Park. FLYING HIGH: The Oakville squirt I Angels, pictured after winning their own invitational tournament in Oakville earlier this month, also won a championship in Brampton recently. Bronte Badminton Club preparing for sixth season of junior action The Bronte Badminton Club for juniors will return to action this September at St. Paul's United Church and Abbey Park High School. The non-profit club, designed for players between the ages of nine and 17, is entering its sixth year of existence. Each year, the Sunday afternoon club accepts a maximum membership of 45 children, with the overflow members playing Friday evenings at Abbey Park. "Because we only have three courts on Sundays, there is a restriction on our numbers," said Bill Hutton, club organizer. "High school gym time on weekends is too costly, so the four hours at St. Paul's (on Sundays) allows us to accommodate 15 members in each of our three sessions." The six courts at Abbey Park on Fridays are ideal for guests and new members who want to try out the sport, and are also used for game competition. Sundays are used for coaching and training. Sandy Corcoran, a Level 1 NCCP coach, is taking over as head coach of the club this year, and will be assisted by Laura Takata and Hutton. Membership for the 24-week season costs $150. There are usually 10-15 openings per year. For more information or to reserve a spot, call Bill Hutton at 905-827-7243 or visit the Bronte Badminton Club's website at www.angelfire.com/games4/bronte.
