www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 4, 2006 - 13 Y campers come in all shapes and sizes Campers are a special group. They come in all sizes and shapes, but they all take a great deal of joy in camp the sunshine, the games, and the fun that comes with a summer day shared with friends. We have two letters to share from special campers. First is a note from sevenyear-old Veronique Drolet. Veronique has been having fun at Y camp for most of the summer -- and she shares a few thoughts here: Why I like the YMCA day camp, by Veronique Drolet (age 7) I'm always happy to go to Y camp because it's lots of fun. We do crafts, sports, games, weekly trips and swim in the pool. Also, we have special events every Friday -- I love to dress-up for them. The Y YMCA counsellors are very nice with me and make sure that I have fun every day. "YMCA Rocks!" Our second note is from Elise Boateng. Elise is 14 years old, and is volunteering with Sneaker Camp -- our youngest campers, aged four to six -- for six or seven weeks this summer. "I have always liked volunteering so when I heard about this opportunity to volunteer at the YMCA of Oakville I knew I needed to take this chance. Volunteering this summer with the YMCA of Oakville has been the best time for me ever. I have learned how to take on a large amount of responsibility. The kids that are in the camp I work in are the cutest kids ever, and I have had so much fun with them. I have met so many new people and learned so many new skills it's just a great experience. I will always keep this experience with me for the rest of my life. -- By Elise Boateng (age 14) Erica Jefferies, YMCA of Oakville Coordinator for Summer Camp, says that she loves having volunteers to help out. "We look for kids who are at least 14 years old with an interest in learning and helping out. We also love to have kids with lots of positive energy and who love kids. Our volunteers are like junior counsellors. They help create activities, go on trips with the kids, and help the counsellors. And there's a chance for them to take some initiative and take the lead sometimes with an activity." Little campers and volunteer campers -- they say it all. Camp is sooooo good!
