Bantam A's win silver in Barrie The Oakville A's bantam baseball team won three of its first four games at a recent tournament in Barrie, going on to finish second. Oakville edged the Etobicoke Rangers 2-1 in their first game, led by a stellar pitching performance by Spencer Gray. After a 4-1 loss to the Burlington Bulls, the A's rebounded to defeat the Brampton Royals 5-1 and finish the round-robin with a 2-1 mark. The A's edged the Barrie Red Sox 3-2 in the semifinal but then fell 4-2 to the Toronto East Dodgers in the championship game. Other members of the team include Michael Vanderlaan, Michael Pavan, Ryan Tobias, Matt Holloway, Alex Burrows, Will Brandes, Andrew Bertrand, Ryan Watt, Chris Ruediger, Kelly Barchan, Juan Ruiz, Brand Johnston and Jordan McNamee-Lamb. Golden A's seek another national title The Oakville Golden A's hope history repeats itself as they compete in the Canadian National Oldtimers' Baseball Federation championship tournament this weekend in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The Golden A's won the tournament the last time it was contested in Yarmouth, in 1994. Oakville has won the tournament on two other occasions (1993 and 2003) and has participated in 12 of the 14 annual competitions. Many of the Golden A's players have been together since their days with the Oakville Minor Baseball Association, including Rob Fisher, Rod Currie, Cal Main, Dave Hamacher, Carlos Paixao, Rich Knight and Gerry Telford. Others, like Dave Peyman, Bernie Arbour, Scott Gadd, Bill Johnson, Ross Hill, Wade Bekar, Greg McEachern, Al Baskett, Tom Bacher, Brian Revin, Steve Grossi, Kevin Carson, Dick Hames, Errol Duncan and Sam Leonard are former Central Ontario Baseball Association and Intercounty League standouts. Oakville, competing in the 44-and-over division, will play its first game today against Spring Lake (Alberta). The Golden A's will then face Great Village (Nova Scotia) and Saskatoon to conclude the round-robin. Quarter-final, semifinal and final games will be played Sunday and Monday. Major A's defeat Burlington The major A's, meanwhile, defeated the Burlington Brants 9-3 in COBA action Monday at Oakville Park. Julian Richards earned the win, yielding only two hits in eight innings, while Kevin Lee broke open the contest with a grand slam in the seventh inning.
