www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 5, 2006 - 3 Oakville doctor not retired yet After 40 years on the job, Dr. Vern Isaak changes practices By Marie MacNeill SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER PHOTO COURTESY DR. VERN ISAAK A LIFETIME OF CARING: Dr. Vern Isaak has retired from his Oakville family practice, but will not hang up his shingle, but rather hang it out again -- all around the globe. On July 28, after four decades, Dr. Vern Isaak retired from his family practice in Oakville -- to travel to prisons around the world. While most people look forward to retirement as a time to relax and enjoy an easier life, Isaak will have none of that. Instead, he will be helping college students find their way, caring for prisoners in Halton Region and travelling to prisons all around the world to encourage inmates living in appalling situations. He has served Oakville families, "We went from some to the fourth generation, stores in Africa with with thorough and compassionate powdered milk and medical care at his office in the half-empty shelves Trafalgar Medical Clinic and at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial to stores here with whole rows just for Hospital (OTMH). He has also been committed to pet food.." offering top notch medical care to college students and to some of Dr. Vern Isaak Canada's most notorious criminals for the last 30 years. Born in Vineland, Ontario, Isaak knew early on that he wanted to be a doctor, feeling sure this was his calling. He announced to his parents that he would need to study at the public high school instead of the Mennonite high school they expected him to attend. "I knew I needed to take Latin to be a doctor and the Mennonite High School didn't offer it," he remembers. He was all of 10 years old. He was only 23 when he obtained his M.D. from the University of Toronto in May of 1965. In his fourth year of medical school, in addition to his studies, he was one of a small number of students chosen to be junior rotating interns at Wellesley Hospital, working in different services from month to month and gaining a wide range of experience in the field of medicine. By the time he was in his official year of internship, he knew he was going to practice family medicine. Isaak married his wife, Betty, in his third year of medical school. The couple made big sacrifices as Isaak sometimes worked shifts of three days and nights straight with one evening off in between while Betty worked in Toronto. "While I studied, Betty got her PHT `putting husband through,'" Isaak recounts with a smile. Upon graduating, Isaak and his wife moved to Oakville and joined his high school friend, See Doctor page 4 2006 MAZDA3 SEDAN GX* 1291 SPEERS ROAD 905.827.4242 (North side between 3rd & 4th Line) · www.oakvillemazda.com email: info@oakvillemazda.com 2006 MAZDA5 GS** *2006 Mazda3 GX (D4XS56 AA00) Lease from $179/month, 24-month lease, $2,845 cash down or g 0% p / , ,, get purchase financing for up to 24 months. **2006 Mazda5 GS (E6SD56 AA00) Lease from $249/ month, 48-month lease, $2,895 cash down or get 4.9% purchase financing for up to 48 months.
