www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 11, 2006 - 11 St. Paul's Church collects tons of paper for charity By Wilma Blokhuis OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF www.oakvilledodge.com St. Paul's United Church is doing its fair share when it comes to recycling. Since the spring of 2004, the church has collected 154.5 metric tons of newspapers, magazines, catalogues, phone books, white paper and junk mail in a unique recycling program offered by Abitibi Consolidated's Recycling Division. During the first six months of this year, 52 metric tons of paper was collected by St. Paul's through Abitibi's Paper Retriever Program, and the church expects to surpass last year's total of 56 metric tons. Last year the church raised $1,230 for a number of local charities it supports and expects to raise some $1,500 this year. The money supports Oakville's Ontario Special Olympics basketball team that practices at the church gym at no charge, said church superintendent Don Cox. The recycling program also supports VON Halton's Alzheimer support group, the Oakville Salvation Army, Oakville Quilters and "our outreach programs, such as providing a Christmas dinner for people helped by the Salvation Army," said Cox. "People bring the paper to church on Sunday," he said, adding the recycling bins are also popular in the neighbhourhood. People living near St. Paul's are happy to dispose of their paper in these bins rather than wait for the blue box collection every two weeks. "This is something we can do to help protect the environment, promote recycling and raise some money for our church projects," said Cox. "And Abitibi has been very good about picking the paper up from our bins and maintaining them. It helps us keep our church looking neat." (St. Paul's has a dozen grass cutters and three gardeners who maintain the church grounds.) "To participate in our paper recycling program, there has to be a charitable component," said Darryl Lambert, Area Manager, Ontario Paper Retriever Program for Abitibi Consolidated. "All of our paper recycling bins support charity." The company placed its first green and yellow recycling bin behind the church at 454 Rebecca St., in April 2004. A second soon followed in September. "This program has just grown," said Lambert, "We may need to increase our program here and place a third bin." The bins are readily accessible from the church parking lot, "and we've had no issues with the neighbours from them being here," said Cox. "The paper is fully recycled," said Lambert. The paper is hauled to Abitibi's recycling centre in Thorold where new newsprint is produced. "We're a full circle recycler." Abitibi has about 800 paper recycling bins located at businesses, schools and churches all of them supporting charity stretching from Toronto and Kitchener and Niagara, including several in Oakville, said Lambert. "Last year we paid out $3.4 million to non-profit organizations," Lambert said, adding the company recently placed its 20,000th bin in North America. Abitibi's bins do not accept cardboard, cereal boxes and milk cartons.
