Mayor Ann Mulvale and Councillor Ralph Robinson were at Fisherman's Wharf recently to unveil the new tables. They were joined by members of the Accessibility Advisory Committee and Oakville's Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion Committee. "We are pleased to introduce these new picnic tables as part of our commitment to improve accessibility of the Town's services and resources for persons with disabilities," said Mulvale. "We hope that these tables will offer individuals who use wheelchairs greater enjoyment of our parks and allow them to picnic with their family and friends more comfortably," said the mayor. Six new accessible tables have been installed in Oakville. Two are located in Coronation Park, two at Fisherman's Wharf, one at Tannery Park and one at Bronte Beach Park. The purchase and installation of these tables was made possible in part by a grant from the Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion Event -- a contribution, which drew praise from Mulvale. The tables are in addition to two that were installed at Lakeside Park in partnership with the March of Dimes. The town is also looking at installing additional accessible tables throughout the parks system. "These enhancements are only a few of the projects that the Town is completing to make our community more accessible in compliance with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act," said Robinson, a member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee. "Our goal is to comply with the spirit of the legislation as well as the letter of the law. The Town's Accessibility Advisory Committee is made up of dedicated members of the public who continue to find new ways to help the Town improve quality of life for residents with disabilities," said Robinson. Web welcomes visually challenged The Town of Oakville's Web site -- www.oakville.ca -- has been updated to offer an enhanced text-only version that is fully accessible for people with vision impairments, blindness, and reduced motor skills. "This new addition to the Web site is an amazing improvement," said Axel Krueger, chair of the town's Accessibility Advisory Committee. "Most Web sites are either difficult or impossible to use for those of us who have impaired vision, but now I can easily access virtually all the information on the Web site," he said. At the upper left-hand corner of every page is a "Text Only" button, which provides access to that version of the Web site. There, the existing web pages are converted to plain text and the information is arranged appropriately for users of assistive technology, such as software that converts visual text to Braille or synthesized speech. Users also have the option to increase the size of the font or change the background and text colours, which helps people with low vision to read the text. "We began investigating ways we could make the Web site more user-friendly for people with vision impairments, while retaining its attractive design and ease of use for other users," said Jeff Lanaus, acting director of Information Systems and Solutions. "Usablenet's LIFT Text Transcoder stood out as the most cost-effective solution, and the disabled users who participated in the trial phase found it offered the best interface for browsing the Web site," said Lanaus. The ability to increase the font size is useful to people with reduced motor skills. These individuals often use a stylus and touch screen technology to get around web sites and may find it frustratingly difficult to click on a small button or link with precision. By making the links larger, the Web site is easier to navigate for these users as well. Krueger noted the enhancement to the Web site is just one of the town's Accessibility Advisory Committee's initiatives being implemented this year. Plans are also in the works to create accessible versions of other Web sites associated with the town, like the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and Oakville Transit sites, in the future.
