www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 26, 2006 - 21 Thunder rolls to championship at regional select tourney Outscoring their opposition 9-1, the Oakville Thunder under-12 girls' select soccer team won the championship at last weekend's Oakville Soccer Club Regional Select Tournament. REPSOCCER The Thunder blanked Pelham, Newmarket and Georgetown in round-robin play, then trailed Newmarket 1-0 in the championship game before scoring two-second half goals for a 2-1 win. Laura Whaley scored the tying goal in the final, with tournament MVP Karley Donnelly-Armoroso netting the winner. Whaley finished the tournament with four goals. Melissa Robinson (two), Amanda Ottoni, Kimmy Lesiuta and Emily Karafilov also scored for the Thunder during the competition. The championship win was Oakville's second of the season, having won the Woolwich Invitational two months ago. The Thunder also reached the final at last month's Burlington Invitational, dropping the gold-medal game to North Mississauga in penalty kicks. Owner of a 13-1 record, the Thunder is now preparing for the Peel-Halton Select Soccer League playoffs, where it will face Brampton, Burlington, Erin Mills and Milton in the opening round. Other members of the team are Miriam Amies, Daniela Deschamps, Sam Drexler, Brianna Haggart, Molly Labenski, Sharalynn Missiuna, Sam Pereira, Robin Schneider, Dee Dee Spagnuolo, Julia Sporcic and Julia Zigrossi. Strikers semifinalists in under-11 boys' action The Oakville Strikers under-11 boys' select soccer team reached the semifinal of last weekend's Oakville Soccer Club Regional Select Tournament. The Strikers and Brampton Raiders played to a scoreless draw through regulation and two overtime periods before the Raiders won in penalty kicks. Brampton went on to win the tournament title. Earlier in the tournament, Oakville defeated Ancaster 4-1, Dixie 3-0 and Georgetown 5-0. Thomas Knapp had three goals for Oakville, with Steven Jean, Jake Smith and Jake Babic FOUR-FOR-FOUR: The Oakville Angels under-15 girls' select soccer team won last weekend's Oakville Soccer Club Regional Select Tournament, the Angels' fourth tournament championship in as many tries this season. Ontario Cup semifinals Four local squads have an opportunity to advance to the Ontario Cup finals as they play semifinal contests this weekend. A possibility remains for an all-Oakville men's provincial final. Oakville CNS Club Livno will face Scarborough GS United at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the Oakville Wisla United meeting Ottawa's St. Anthony's Premier at 4:30 p.m. Both contests will be played at Kitchener's Centennial Stadium. In under-12 boys' action, the Oakville Raiders will play the Ajax Strikers tomorrow at St. Marcellinus in Mississauga, beginning at 11 a.m. The other semifinal involving a local team is in under-17 tier 2 boys' competition, as the Oakville Strikers play the North York Armour Heights Knights Sunday at 10 a.m., also in Mississauga. Midget Hawks second at all-Ontario championships The Oakville midget 2 Hawks won their first five games at the recent provincial lacrosse championships in Mimico, finishing with silver. Oakville downed Toronto Beaches 5-2, Windsor 6-4, Guelph 3-1, Brantford 8-2 and Brampton 4-2, then held a lead with seven minutes left in the gold-medal game against Halton Hills before falling 6-5. Players on the team were David Morrallee, Bryce MacRae, Bryan Campbell, Justin Singer, Taylor Cane, Michael Nomura, Josh Wilson, Stephan Blaylock, David Burns, Corey Droniuk, Zach Cruickshank, Taylor Rivers, Drew Dickson, Derrick Schnarr, Jordan Steip, Austen Gregoris and Kyle McFall. Keith Morrallee and Karl Steip coached the team, with Bruce MacRae serving as trainer. ALL-ONTARIO SILVER: Winning all but their final game at the recent provincial lacrosse championships in Mimico, the Oakville midget 2 Hawks earned provincial silver.
