Removing more than two trees 15-30 cm in diameter in any one year would also require a permit. Permit fees would be waived to remove dead or dying trees -- though it would require a property owner to submit a report from a certified arborist verifying the tree's ill-health. "In our view, no bylaw is necessary; those who have proposed this law have not made the case that there is a problem with trees on private property in this town, yet they want to take away our rights. This is a rights issue," stated the release. While there is growing concern about protection of trees in regard to development and particularly infill development in Oakville's established neighbourhoods, Town staff report developers removing trees would be regulated more by the Planning Act, not the private tree bylaw. According to Davies, Herring wrote to the Town of Oakville on the issue and his letter was circulated. As it was, it generated more and more interest until a meeting was called and the group was formed. Davies said the group has nearly 30 members and it's growing. It's aim is very specific. The group's aim is to fight the proposed tree bylaw and then disband. According to Davies, the group hopes to alert Oakville residents about the bylaw's contents; present its position to Town council; stop the bylaw and then disband. "You will no longer have the right to cut down a mature tree on your own property. To remove a tree, you will have to draw a plan, complete an application, pay a fee of $250 to $1,000, hire an arborist in some cases, get written agreement from neighbours where they are affected, and wait for a Town official to say yes or no. Only they would have the right to decide and they can say no. They could also order you to plant a new tree elsewhere. And after all that, you haven't even paid to take the tree down and if you ignore the bylaw, you could be fined up to $25,000," outlines the release. NTBiN will be making presentations to Town Council at upcoming meetings -- to the Administrative Services Committee on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall's Committee Rooms 1 and 2; to Town Council on Monday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chamber at Town Hall. "The more members we represent, the more impact we will have," said Davies.
