The duo was testing a canoe on the creek around 4 p.m., but got into trouble when they ventured past the break wall and out into Lake Ontario where waves were up to one-metre high. A small craft wind advisory was in effect on the lake at the time and it took its toll on the canoeists, who did have all the required safety equipment with them. When the men realized the water was too choppy they attempted to turn the canoe around, but instead ended up in the water with the canoe capsized. Emergency services were called, but the men who had grabbed onto their canoe were pulled out of the water by a boater who was in the area. It's estimated the men were in the water for about 10 minutes before being pulled to safety and returned to shore unharmed. The Marine Unit of the Halton Regional Police Service advises all boaters with intentions of heading out on the lake to check the Marine Weather before venturing out. Marine Weather is available on the Environment Canada Web site at www.ec.gc.ca.
