West Oak Public School's Marleen Warne is one of Canada's Most Outstanding Principals. Selected from a pool of nominations submitted on behalf of public school principals from across the country, Warne is one of 32 to receive the honour this year. "This is a highlight," said Warne, who has been principal of West Oak since it opened five years ago. "It's what I do every single day that's being recognized. "It's kind of years of growing in the career, the culminating experience, to have an award that is everything you do," she added, smiling. The best part though, isn't the national recognition, the fact she's being inducted into the National Academy of Principals, or the awards dinner next month. It's where her nomination came from. "It's very touching for me because it was my staff who nominated me. That's why it's so emotional," said Warne, who taught for 16 years before becoming a principal 10 years ago. "If the people I work with every day feel that way about me, that means the world to me. That's the most rewarding part." West Oak staff got together last October to nominate their principal for the honour. It's the third year Canada's Most Outstanding Principals have been recognized an initiative of The Learning Partnership, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to championing a strong public education system in Canada. The nomination package had to include examples and support for the principal's dedication to categories including partnership with parents and the community, showing successful change in the school and innovation that resulted in improved student achievement. Warne's open-door policy at the school, decision-making based on the student's best interests, promotion of a healthy lifestyle and more were just some characteristics noted in her nomination. She was also applauded for ensuring West Oak is a Living School a provincial project to ensure an active and healthy lifestyle among students.
