www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 17, 2007 - 5 Region looking for proposals to build subsidized housing units Halton is one step closer to having 120 more units of assisted rental housing. The Region recently issued a request for proposals from non-profit and cooperative organizations and private developers for the development of the units. Under the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's Ontario new affordable housing program agreement, Halton has been allocated $8.4 million to provide capital assistance of up to $70,000 per unit. Halton will also provide grant assistance under the program. "The provision of this funding by senior orders of government is especially welcomed, as development of these units in Halton will help ease the pressure on our waiting list and increase housing options for lower income Halton households," said Regional Chairman Gary Carr. The 120-unit allocation includes 30 units for mental health clients and victims of domestic violence to be supported by local non-profit community agencies. Halton's annual housing report identified a shortfall of 400 to 800 units of assisted housing in 2004. The Region is facilitating the delivery of the units to start developing a sustainable program for assisted housing -- one of the short-term priorities of Halton's Comprehensive Housing Strategy. A mandatory bidders' meeting has been scheduled for Feb. 2 for those interested in submitting a proposal. For further information and to obtain a copy of the request for proposals submission package contact Andrea Mindenhall, manager of purchasing services, at 905-825-6000, ext. 7037.
