www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 19, 2007 - 9 Resident taking tree petition to Town Hall Oakville resident Linda da Costa is gathering signatures on a petition against the Town of Oakville approving $25,000 in local taxpayer money to saving the 250-year-old oak tree on Bronte Road. Town council was to have discussed the item Jan. 15, but will now do so Jan. 29 to allow for public input. The approval of spending $25,000 must be officially sanctioned by Oakville Town council, but was already approved at Halton Region in late December. Mayor Rob Burton, after polling Zezel to visit Hopedale This Saturday Maple Leaf Alumni Peter Zezel will be at Hopedale Mall between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Zezel will be at the shopping centre located at Rebecca Street and Third Line with the Bronte Butterfly Foundation and Kinsmen Club of Oakville. It's part of the festivities leading up to "Oakville Night" at the Ricoh Coliseum to be held Feb. 25. Zezel will be signing autographs and kids of all ages will have a chance to check out the interactive hockey display. High school students, the Butterfly Foundation and Kinsmen will also be on hand to sell tickets to the upcoming Oakville Night game and encourage all visitors to help break the American Hockey League attendance record of 2,784 set by the City of Vaughan. Tickets to the Feb. 25 game cost $15 per person with proceeds benefitting the Bronte Butterfly Foundation and Kinsmen Club of Oakville. Gifts will go to schools sending the most Oakvillians to the Ricoh Coliseum including a framed autographed Marlie jersey. The public will get the opportunity to win exciting prizes as well when they purchase a $2 raffle ticket also in support of the Butterfly Foundation and Kinsmen. Raffle tickets will be available for sale at Hopedale on Saturday. Prizes include a 27" Sony WEGA TV, Leafs and Raptors tickets, and more. The Bronte Butterfly Foundation is a not-for-profit, registered charitable organization with a mandate to create an interactive learning environment. Town councillors, assured his regional counterparts at a Dec. 20 Halton Region Council meeting that a funding deal to save the tree that was approved that day by Halton Region council, would be approved by Oakville council in the new year. The deal -- a three-way split of $75,000 among the Province, Halton Region and Town of Oakville -- would make up the shortfall between the $268,000 raised by a community fundraising effort and the $343,000 total needed to build the expanding Bronte Road around the tree that sits outside Halton Regional Headquarters on Bronte Road. Though the fundraising committee had until Dec. 15 to raise the additional money to build around the tree, it had fallen a little short. That's when Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn stepped in with a provincial commitment of $25,000 and a challenge that Halton Region and Oakville councils match with their own $25,000. Though the road will not be built until approximately 20101, engineering plans must be begun for the new roadway configuration. Halton Region coughed up its $25,000 and was assured by Burton that Oakville would also pay its $25,000. Burton based the commitment on the poll of council, previous support for saving the tree and even a bid to get it declared a heritage tree. Public support for saving the tree has been divided. Public support for committing Oakville council prior to a formal vote is now also divided. DaCosta is mounting her petition campaign to present to Oakville council at its Jan. 29 meeting. The petition reads: "Kevin Flynn, MPP Oakville/Mayor Rob Burton ... We the undersigned wish to express our strong opposition to the plan to donate tax money from the Region of Halton and the Town of Oakville to the Save the Oak Tree Fund. We feel there are many better ways to spend the money." Anyone interested in signing it can contact da Costa at 905845-0430. Don't hate me because I'm thin & beautiful. Meet the new TM MOTOKRZR.
