www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 27, 2007 - 9 Halton social workers ratify deal A new contract for Halton social service workers has been ratified by both the employees and Halton Region. The deal, which affects 70 members of CUPE Local 3732, who provide employment referral and income support to social assistance recipients, was approved by regional council Wednesday and unanimously supported by staff last week. The agreement is effective for two years -- this year and retroactively for 2006 -- said Halton acting Director of Human Resource Services John Phelan. Phelan said it includes a three per cent salary increase in each of the years and minor improvements to existing health benefits. "It's a good deal," he said. "It's nice to see we could ratify (the contract) without citizens who receive these services being affected." CUPE national representative Daniela Scarpelli shared similar sentiments, noting it's a "fair contract." "The membership was pleased with it," she said. In November, the Local 3732 members voted in favour of strike action, but never hit the picket line. At the time, the union alleged the workers were stressed and overworked, while the Region declined to comment. Phelan said at this point he can't comment further on the allegations, pointing to the Region's original position that it doesn't want to get into bargaining issues through the media. check out The Oakville Beaver for the best automotive tips every week ... www.oakvillebeaver.com FACTORY D IRECT L IQUIDATION SALE Quality Flooring rs' at Builde Pricing There's NO Ordering & NO Waiting It's Available To Take Home Today What's coming in February Pricing Laminate Exotics Cdn.
