www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 31, 2007 - 15 Like a Fish Out of Water on stage at Wellspring Oakville women diagnosed with cancer are being urged to bring their guys to take in a bit of local theatre on Thursday, Feb. 8. Like a Fish Out of Water will be staged at Wellspring, located on Sixth Line at Dundas Street. Men and women who have seen Like a Fish Out of Water: Men Being Helpful to Women with Cancer have found it eye-opening. It's about the usually unspoken struggles of men who want to be helpful to their spouses who have been diagnosed with cancer. Wellspring provides emotional and psychological support, at no charge, to individuals and families living with cancer. Like a Fish Out of Water was written by Dr. Ross Gray and Dr. Karen Fergus from the Psychosocial and Behavioural Research Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. In the play, two men are talking on stage about the challenges they face in trying to be supportive to their spouses who have cancer. The men talk about the shock of their partner's diagnosis, about the need to take on roles their partner had, mistakes they make in trying to be helpful, physical changes their partners go through, implications of illness for intimacy, deep fears that remain hidden and how they cope. The event is free, but pre-registration is recommended as seating is limited. Like a Fish Out of Water is based on a study conducted by the Psychosocial and Behavioural Research Unit at Sunnybrook. Researchers interviewed men about what they faced through their partner's illness and treatment of breast cancer. However, Like a Fish Out of Water performances have relevance for couples dealing with any type of cancer. "This is a performance to attend with your significant other. It is a springboard for reflection and discussion. It's revealing, it's funny, it's helpful," said Judi Perry Brinkert, manager of Wellspring Halton-Peel. Anyone is welcome to attend however it would be of most significance to men who have a wife diagnosed with cancer and their wives. The performance starts at 7 p.m. There is also a follow-up discussion set for the following Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., again at Wellspring. Call Wellspring at 905-257-1988.
