That's because they don't have enough technology -- only four computers for more than 60 students, youths who wouldn't just use it to learn, but could use it to help overcome their disabilities. So teachers in the Futures (formerly Life Skills) program are going to bat -- or rather the computer -- for their students. Actually, they're going out into the community in search of computers and other technology to not only give their students a leg up on a future job, but also in their own life. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER The students have mild intellectual challenges, often coupled with a physical challenge, and technology can not only help them get work upon graduation, but gain ground against their challenges. "When they leave here, these are not students who are just going to jump in their car to go somewhere," said Jennifer Gunion, head of WOSS Special Education. Gunion said it's likely it will be through technology, e-mail and Internet access, that the students will stay in touch with friends, family and navigate the broader community. Computers and technology can benefit almost everyone, and in the case of these students, it can actually help them even up the playing field.
