www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 17, 2007 - 21 OVERWEIGHT? Diabetes centre honours Dr. Grahame Owen Friends and family of well-known local family physician, Dr. Grahame Owen, recently gathered to celebrate his contribution to the health and well-being of Oakville. Dr. Owen's contribution to diabetes education was recognized by Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and the Halton Diabetes Program (HDP) with the dedication of the Diabetes Education Centre where countless people come to learn about this chronic condition and how they can manage it. The naming of the Grahame Owen Diabetes Education Centre at the Oakville site of the HDP offices recognizes Dr. Owen's leadership and ongoing support of this program, and his commitment to lifelong learning. "One could not overstate the contributions Dr. Grahame Owen has made to our healthcare system, locally, provincially and nationally," noted John Oliver, Halton Healthcare Services', President and CEO. "Dr. Owen has had a very distinguished and illustrious career as a family physician, coroner, mentor, patient advocate and of course, educator. While it would take hours to recount Dr. Owen's many accomplishments the one we are here to celebrate today is his role in providing people with access to diabetes education at the Hospital and throughout the region." "Dr. Owen has always been a strong proponent of education. He taught us to always look at challenges as opportunities - and rather than wallowing in our problems, to focus our energies on finding a solution," noted Dr. Peter Eddenden, Medical Advisor to the Oakville site of the Halton Diabetes Program. "Dr. Owen has always believed that education is key in empowering people to self-manage their chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma. With this conviction, he founded the Diabetes Education Program at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) in the early 1960's and successfully established the Oakville Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association in 1965." In 1997, the Diabetes Program at A new investigational medication for weight loss is now availabl in clinical research studies.
