Both Oakville and Burlington advanced to this weekend's Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship tournament in Newmarket. The only blemish on the Oakville midget AAA Rangers' record at last weekend's South Central AAA (SCTA) qualifying tournament may well turn out to be their biggest source of inspiration heading into this weekend's Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship tournament. The Rangers took full advantage of home ice, going 4-01 to land one of the league's two spots in the OMHA tournament. Oakville nailed down its berth with a convincing 6-1 win over the Welland Tigers Sunday at Dominion Twin Rinks. But it was the Rangers' tie, a 3-3 draw with the Burlington Eagles, that gave the team its biggest boost. Burlington routed the Rangers in their last meeting of the regular season, a victory that helped the Eagles (31-3-2) finish first in the SCTA ahead of Oakville (28-4-4). "It's a huge rivalry and it makes for some wicked hockey," said Rangers' assistant coach Geoff Browne. "They've given us a tough run all year. We got a lot of momentum from that (3-3) game." Knowing they can compete with anyone will certainly help as the Rangers will face some stiff competition at the OMHA tournament in Newmarket this weekend. That includes Burlington, which earned the second SCTA berth. "We had a good idea that we had the potential to do something," Browne said. "Of course, you don't know about the competition. We've had our sights set high -- going to the national championship -- but we've got to get by this step See Minor page 31 2007 SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE SIX WEEKS OF GENERAL CAMP DATES TO CHOOSE FROM PLUS 2007 RANGERS F.C.
