www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 6, 2007 - 7 Fire damages Progress Court business A fire Saturday night at Canadian Linen and Uniform Service on Progress Court caused an estimated $50,000 in content and structural damage, according to the Oakville Fire Department. The damage would have been a lot worse, said Oakville Fire Department spokesperson Michael Harrison, if it wasn't for the building's sprinkler system. The blaze began in the building while it was unoccupied, but the heat started a chain reaction. The automatic sprinklers responded, which notified the monitoring company of a problem. The company then called the fire department. The neighbourhood was clouded with smoke when the fire department arrived on scene, they say, and visibility in the building was pretty much zero. Harrison said the fire started in an area with rags and carts filled with clothes. As the sprinklers responded, the fire was contained to the area, allowing fire fighters to quickly extinguish it, he added. "Although there was smoke throughout the plant, without this required system, the fire and heat damage would have been much greater," Harrison said. The damaged building was then ventilated in an effort to help remove the smoke from it. Officers in the prevention division of the Oakville Fire Department continue to examine the incident to determine a cause. Anyone with any information that may be related to the blaze is being asked to contact the Oakville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division at 905-338-4404. WRITE DOWN THESE NUMBERS Student wounded by scissors Two Oakville Trafalgar High School students are facing criminal charges after an altercation resulted in one student being stabbed in the head with a pair of scissors Tuesday. Preliminary investigations by the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau suggest that one student began taunting the other student, poking them repeatedly with a metre stick. Although the second student repeatedly asked to be left alone the poking continued until the second student became frustrated and threw a pair of scissors at the tormentor. The scissors pierced the first student's skin and became lodged in the head at which point Halton Police and Halton EMS were called. The student was taken to Oakville Trafalgar Hospital and treated for, what was characterized as, a minor injury before being released. Both students have been charged with assault with a weapon and will attend Youth Court in Milton on May 10. Neither student can be identified because of provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate this incident. It's time to take action Continued from page 5 husband eventually got his wife back, but those who bought and sold her escaped without any punishment. That's not uncommon, the sisters explained, because while human trafficking is illegal, many countries don't properly enforce laws against it. "Do you think there's anything you can do about this?" Goetz asked students. Appealing to government and spreading awareness were just some of the answers students came up with. More than anything, the Sisters say they hope their presentations serve as a launching point for young people to take action against this problem. "For many of you, this is probably the fist time you're getting this information. It's pretty overwhelming that human beings would do this to other human beings," said Goetz. "I think there's a denial in people," she added, after the presentation. "They don't want to believe this could be happening." Or, in some cases, they simply can't believe people are enslaved at this point in history. The discussion on how to take action continued after school with the sisters and the more than 100 members of the St. Thomas Aquinas Peace and Justice Group.
