www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 4, 2007 - 25 Near sellout for oomama's Stephen Lewis fundraiser Ticket sales for a fundraiser to support African grandmothers are exceeding organizers' wildest expectations. More than 1,000 tickets have been sold for the May 10 event at Appleby College featuring Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, as guest speaker. Sales have far surpassed an original goal of 650 tickets and a new goal to sell 1,200 tickets has been set. The Oakville-based grandmother group, oomama, is organizing the evening with all proceeds going directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to support grandmothers in Africa who are raising their orphaned grandchildren alone. Oomama is one of 150 similar grandmother groups across Canada, extending from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island. In his speech, Lewis will highlight the impact the national group of grandmothers in Canada is having on African grandmothers and the orphans in their care. "It is inspirational and gratifying to know so many people are supportive of the grandmother caregivers of Africa," said Carole Holmes, founder and chair of oomama. Her words are echoed by Sherry Ardell who is organizing the event on behalf of oomama. "Oakville has given great support to the May 10 fundraiser. We are hoping to sell every ticket and have a full house. Each ticket sold will change lives in Africa," she said. Within the next three years, 18 million African children are expected to be orphaned by HIV/AIDS. For many, their entire future rests in the hands of their African grandmothers elderly women who scrape enough food and money together to ensure their grandchildren have enough to eat and the chance to go to school. The fundraiser takes place Thursday, May 10 at 7.30 p.m. at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $50. Charitable receipts will be provided. For tickets, call Kathy 905849-7075 or Donna 1-905945-8915. Each week with TERRA Trends we will be dispelling some of the most common myths associated with ponds. Myth 2: You should never have algae in your pond. Fact: Green algae, in proper proportion, is beneficial plant life. Fish eat it and it's part of the ecology of any living, healthy pond. Too much algae has a simple cause: too much sunlight. That's why a well-designed natural pond includes shade sources from landscaping and aquatic plants.
