Results of the Ministry of the Environment's (MOE) Clarkson Airshed Study -- which looked at six monitoring stations spread throughout southeast Oakville and Mississauga -- were presented to the Region's health and social services committee Tuesday. They revealed that four of the stations within Oakville's boundaries found levels of respirable particulate matter that surpass acceptable levels and contribute to a taxed or stressed airshed. The matter is formed from chemical reactions in the atmosphere and through fuel combustion. Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal explained where the emissions are coming from to the committee, including vehicles, long-range transport and industrial sources. "Industries are a major contributor," he noted, pointing out that local industries may contribute as much as 25 per cent to the levels of particulate matter in the study area. A report from Dr. Nosal to the committee said respirable particulate matter "has been clearly linked to both acute and chronic health impacts including premature deaths and hospital admissions for heart and lung conditions." The study also found that nitric oxide concentrations detected at monitoring stations along the QEW are significantly higher than other stations (Support Your Local Carrier) SYLC DELIVERY For home delivery & customer service call 905-845-9742 Mon., Tues., & Thurs. 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Wed. & Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. or Saturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. For new subscriptions, call 905-845-9742 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com OAKVILLE DODGE We're Moving to Trafalgar Rd.
