It will be one of the more than 110 Wheels in Motion events held across Canada June 10. Residents are being encouraged to wheel, walk or run through downtown Oakville to improve the quality of life for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and related disabilities. Students at Glen Abbey's Abbey Park High School took time out Friday for one of several preevents being staged to boost awareness of the event. On Friday, 300 students attended an assembly at the Abbey Gate high school and then watched or took part in a wheelchair relay and wheelchair basketball. The fifth annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event in Oakville will raise funds to build a wheelchair accessible dock on Sixteen-Mile Creek. Presented by Scotiabank, the fundraiser will support development of the accessible dock. "An accessible dock will benefit all of the people in our community," said Stephen Cull, Oakville's Wheels In Motion event leader. "This project will transform the urban wasteland area under the Rebecca Street Bridge into a waterfront dock and park that welcomes people of all ages and abilities. Nothing like this has ever been built in Canada," said Cull. The accessible dock should also make boating activities more available to children and seniors, too. Cull heads up CharterAbility, which is in the process of getting an accessible boat built, too. CharterAbility, Wau Nui O Kanaka Outrigger Canoe Club, and the Town of Oakville are working together under the banner of the Partners for Accessible Recreational Docking (PARDNERS) to raise the $65,000 required to build the dock. The project is designed to promote healthy activity for people of all abilities and will provide amenities accessible to all boaters, including washrooms and picnic tables. "This worthy project will allow everyone in the community to enjoy Oakville's wonderful waterways," said Bill Crook, Executive Director of Wheels In Motion. Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion is an annual event held in communities across Canada. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Man In Motion World Tour. Twenty years ago, Rick Hansen wheeled around the world, fuelled by the dream of a fully accessible and inclusive society, and a cure for spinal cord injury. His legendary Man In Motion World Tour spanned more than 40,000 km through 34 countries, took over two years, and raised $26 million for spinal cord injury. Today this dream lives on through the Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion event. Oakville residents can celebrate by taking part in the event on June 10. It will begin with registration at the Burloak Canoe Club, 14 Water St. at 8:30 a.m., the event will get underway at 9 a.m., winding its way through 5.3 km in downtown Oakville and ending around noon. It's a family-friendly event with clowns, a live band, and many free food items and services like onsite chair massages donated by sponsors, according to Jeff Gareau, Chair of Media Relations and Community Development. Also, new for this year is the additional Medichair Wheelchair Skills Competition at 10:30 a.m where teams of five members each will race against each other in wheelchairs grabbing items from groceries to laundry, which really gives people a perspective of what it is like being in a wheelchair. In anticipation of the event, the second annual Breakfast at Timothy's will be held Saturday, May 26 at 9 a.m. at 321 Lakeshore Rd. Details are available at www.oakvillewheels.ca and Gareau said there's always a need for celebrity pancake flippers for the annual breakfast. Last year's event in Oakville raised approximately $10,896 and supported three local projects -- assisting in purchasing equipment for two local athletes with spinal cord injury who are on the Canadian Men's Sledge Hockey Team; rehabilitation of a local individual with spinal cord injury; and, the CHAT program, an injury prevention program presented to 16 to 19-year-olds in Oakville. "We're extremely grateful to the volunteers who continue to help make this annual event a success," notes Rick Hansen, CEO and President of the Rick Hansen Foundation, which has generated more than $178 million.
