16 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 18, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Eastview students embraced entrepreneurial spirit By Lizzy Fox and McKenna Gray GR. 8, EASTVIEW SCHOOL I f you had walked into Eastview Public School on May 4 you would have been surprised by what you saw. From afar it would have appeared to be a convention of businessmen and women pitching their products and services to potential investors and buyers. However, as you approached the displays you would have seen Eastview's Grade 8 population convincing judges, teachers and their fellow peers to purchase their products or services. At the beginning of April, Eastview Grade 8 students were assigned the task of creating their own business. The purpose of the assignment was to teach students the values of Entrepreneurialism. Soon we found ourselves researching, marketing and developing a product or service to meet the needs of our community. We learned about the expense of starting a business, the proper etiquette of being a businessperson and how to plan, prepare and present a compelling business plan. We created our products, made advertisements, brochures, business cards, etc. to market our product. We created budgets and calculated expenses. We contacted community businesses for ideas and donations. We wrote proposals, drafted letters and put together our "storefront" displays. Finally, on May 4 we invited the public to our two gyms to view our work. Parents, teachers, students, business leaders and visitors had the opportunity to purchase everything from candles, to jewelry and plants, to even bobble heads. They could also book a service such as dog walking and yard work. The fair presented an incredible variety of creations and ideas. In addition to teachers and representatives from the school board, judges were selected from the business community. We would like to thank representatives from many area companies, the Halton Region, BCE and the Royal Bank for their time to help assess the stu- Oakville's Natural Stone Supplier PERMA dent work. We enjoyed meeting them and discussing our businesses. Motivation and determination paid off for some diligent students who received awards for their businesses. Josh Lundy, Ben Sibley and Boulton Doolittle won the award for Best Presentation for their business Pro Outlet. Emily White won the award for Best Product/Service for her business Emazing Jewelry. Megan Fixter and Kelsey Brasil won the award for Best Business Plan for their business Sweet Dreams. Lizzy Fox won the Investors' Choice Award for her business Dream Beadz. Cooper Rush and Steven Buckley won the Young Entrepreneur Award (which was selected by the students) for their business C.S. Cologne. The following students won awards for the top two businesses in each class: Jeremy Sims, Alex Hill, Andrew Crotty, Kelvin Bunner, Nayab Ahmad, Iva Filipovic, Rachel Currie, Leanne Larsen, Beth Brownell, David Lipton, Alex Gartner, Taylor Strevett, Zafira Rehmtulla, Emily Ferguson, McKenna Gray, Charlotte Bullock, Sophie Kurucz, Mallory Thacker and Gillian Lockhart. We learned a great deal about the business world from our participation in this project. Many of us didn't realize just how much work and time goes into developing an idea, making the product and marketing it to potential buyers. It was an opportunity we won't soon forget and some of us may even revisit once we have finished school. By chance if you missed the Entrepreneurial Fair this year we hope you will visit next year's Grade 8 displays. You don't want to miss it!
