It's about focus. It's about training. That's what Kristin Potts used to become a swim instructor and lifeguard at the YMCA of Oakville. And that's what your child can work towards this summer ­ at the YMCA of Oakville Aquatic Camps. Y Aquatic Camps provide the perfect combination of learning and fun. Your child can earn a swimming certification from the Lifesaving Society in the safety and calm of the Y's two pools ­ and at the same time enjoy the `camp' fun and atmosphere that only YMCA staff can provide. Kristin, an Abbey Park High School Grade 12 student, has been a swimmer and dancer for many years and has worked hard to get to her position as a lifeguard/instructor at the Y which she has held since 2005. "The NLS course was probably the hardest one, but the first Bronze Star course was a big challenge, too ­ I had to get a grasp of what I needed to know and do and how to learn it." Fully certified for her job, Kristin set her sights on the pool several years ago and followed through with the required courses, including Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard Service (NLS), and several first aid courses. As a lifeguard, she is now required to do regular re-certifications and goes through four training sessions every year to ensure that her skills are sharp and Y swimmers are safe. Kristin is proud of her job and the responsibility that it carries. "We do short shifts of 20 minute rotations between two or three lifeguard stations depending on ratios ­ and I have to make sure that I'm alert and focused when I'm scanning the pool. I have to be patient and creative, too, in order to work with kids." Working in Y Aquatics has its bonus points too, says Kristin. "The hours are really good and the pay is good, and it's a really great group. There are a lot of high school students so that makes it fun." Kristin is a well-rounded young lady who is a strong student and has her sights set on universi- YMCA lifeguard Kristin Potts ty next year and an Honours Science program.
