The students, who came from W.H. Morden, were competing in the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals, otherwise known as D2k.7. "This was probably the most beneficial experience that any child could ever go to on any level of education," said Kathie Gregoire, a school parent, who made the trip to Knoxville. "All the kids were there for the same purpose, as well as the parents." The two teams of students who were competing, had captured first and second place in the Ontario finals, making them eligible for the global finals of this international competition. The teams were competing an event called `Car'DI'ology', where they had to build a structure made out of cards that could support a large amount of weight without weighing more than 65 grams. One of the Morden teams created a structure that held 490 pounds while only weighing a total of 64.5 grams. This managed to land them a place of 13 out of the 67 teams competing in their category. The second team from Morden was 25 out of the 67 teams. While in Knoxville, the group from Morden stayed at the University of Tennessee campus. The campus was sealed off to the public in order to provide a safe environment for the students participating in the competition. "I have never felt so safe at a function in my entire life," said Gregoire. "They had road closures everywhere and nobody was allowed on campus without official I.D." The competition took place between May 23 to 27, allowing the group to have two free days to experience the Smoky Mountains and explore some of Tennessee. The size of the competition was astounding, with over 991 teams taking part. Teams came from as far away as the United Kingdom, China, Korea, Singapore and Poland. Opening and closing ceremonies took place, with all teams participating and wearing colours representing their country or state and resembled something along the lines of the Olympics. "It was the biggest event they have ever had," said Gregoire. "They had a huge opening and closing ceremony in Neyland Stadium, which was a spectacular sight to see." In order to be in Tennessee for the competition, the school had to pay all associate expenses through fundraisers and donations. Although the school fell short of its fundraising goal of $21,000, the group headed to Knoxville still did an excellent job of gathering support. The final total raised has yet to be determined, but students at Morden managed to raise almost $10,000 from campaigns such as selling school bracelets. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn provided the group with non-financial support such as Canada pins to trade with other students in Tennessee. "We did pretty good overall, although we did end up short of our goal," said Gregoire. "What we did accomplish in that period of time was amazing. Everybody down there was blown away by the support that we received from our community. The kids themselves raised almost $10,000 on their own in five weeks. And then the rest came through sponsorships." For W.H. Morden, preparations have already begun for next year's competition, with the school hoping to involve more students in different grade levels. The school also hopes to see other teams from the Oakville community participating, as the competition is open to all schools, everywhere. P ENTS RES THE 21 FOR EVENT!
