4- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 13, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Organic market to open in Kerr Village By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The rural world is reclaiming urban Oakville. At least on Saturdays, beginning this week in Kerr Village. It marks the inaugural day of a new open-air Organic Farmers Market. Local growers and producers within a 150-km radius will convene in the Heritage Square (340 Kerr St.) between 8 a.m.-1 p.m. to offer up their in-season, naturally- grown and prepared fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, crafts and prepared foods. Live music, children's crafts, cooking demos, preserving workshops and chef/farmer pairings are part of the regular Saturday line-up. To help market-goers put together an ecologically-sound dinner plate full of delicious intrigue, each Saturday features team fare at which a local chef offers a cooking lesson with locally-grown ingredients. It has taken a team of three to get this "something-for-everyone" market off the ground. Back in January, Carrie Ann Watson began researching markets throughout North America and plucked out the most adaptable ideas for Oakville. "The last thing we wanted to do was create another parking lot market because it would not be able to achieve all of our goals," said Watson who is the market's director. Approval from the Kerr Street BIA came in May, Anise Docherty "The last thing we wanted to do was create another parking lot market because it would not be able to achieve all of our goals." Carrie Ann Watson Market Director (905) 849-4998 Receive up to $2300 in Government Rebates up to or factory rebate* free 10-year parts & labour coverage* $ 1,500 from Slow Food came on board to handle the chef/farmer pairings and Kerr Street BIA's Susan Curran have worked around the clock for months getting everything in place. The market operates on the belief that everyone has the right to safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate food that is produced in an environmentally-sustainable way and provided in a manner that promotes human dignity, said Watson. In other words, organizers want to encourage residents to eat local, eat organic and eat fresh, healthy and nutritious. This Saturday's chef Steve Chabot of Stoney's Bread Co., will team up with Acton's Whole Circle Farm to create a dish that features beef from grass-fed cattle. Workshops focused on preserving, nutrition on a limited income, composting, chemical-free lawn care and other earth-friendly topics are also planned for subsequent Saturdays until Oct. 27. Three-piece acoustic string band `Mr. Rick and The Biscuits' takes the stage this Saturday and each one after highlights local jazz, Latin, rock and country music talents. Organizers have covered every detail with an ecological bent, from biodegradable bags and vegetable based plastic dishes that can go into the Vermicomposter to solar-powered energy. "We're also planning for lots of really fun events like an organic version of the `Iron ChefTM', a tribute to New Orleans with some Cajun-style cooking to coincide with the Oakville Jazz Festival, and Three Sisters Saturday on Thanksgiving weekend, with some very special guests from the Six Nations, added Watson. Volunteers are needed to help on market days setting up tents, signs, banners and picnic tables, assist in the chef's station and info booth to name a few of the vital tasks. Shifts are broken down into two-hour commitments and are ideal for students working toward community service credits.
